THE month of July had always been nature's infamous amphitheatre. It enabled the clouds to wage war against the high and mighty sun. Monsoon, an evil being in disguise always prompted nasty dust to gather inside the human brains and clog them.
To Han Ju Ho, July was just a nuisance. The quality of the regular winds deteriorated faster than any other month. The arrival of monsoon during late June always caught him off-guard. July was always a step ahead of June. It delayed his filtration dates, often leading to the uncertainty of the peace of Jeju. Nothing scared him more than the invisible dust of gloom and wickedness, that gave rise to the causes of misery amongst humans.
Ju Ho stared at his deserted bakery which had served most of its customers early in the morning and the noon. It took only a few minutes for the clouds to assemble and pour everything they had on the island of Jeju. To his dismay, the day's business had taken a bitter turn since then. People only looked for shelter at moments like that. They scurried back home or to other places with the hope that it would be over soon. He could see pedestrians taking shelter under the extended roof of the bakery, looking like freshly showered crows.
June for that particular year had been pretty harsh on the residents. It had called over the clouds earlier than usual and had caused immense sufferings to many small roadside businesses.
He stirred the lukewarm milk that he had poured over the instant coffee powder in his mug. Now that no one was there to disturb him, he had decided to make the approaching evening convert into his personal time. Ju Ho wondered whether his subscription of the Netflix platform was still valid. He really couldn't remember the last when he had decided to watch something to keep his mind off of his concerns.
While he was trying to think hard about remembering the deadline, he dropped his spoon from his hand. Internally cursing himself, he bent down to get it.
"God, I need to wash this properly now." Ju Ho clicked his tongue, his forehead forming a crease.
"Well, that's what you get for being clumsy."
His neighbour was standing infront of the counter, some ten feet away from him. She was neatly dressed as if she had just returned from her part-time work, a few strands of her hair dangling around her face. It was so sudden that she almost earned a shriek from Ju Ho.
"Goodness gracious," Ju Ho almost let a profanity come out of his mouth. "When did you come here?"
"Just now. You were too busy picking your spoon to notice."
"Do you need something?" enquired Ju Ho, his face colouring his clear surprise. He wasn't expecting to see Ye Bin at such an odd hour. The clock attached on the wall opposite to him, told that it's been only a few minutes since its hour hand had reached six. Ye Bin usually remained at her floor during this time, trying to improvise her art.
