The trip back to the tower was much faster, most likely having to do with the fact that they no longer needed to maintain any manner of secrecy now that the mission had been completed. Although Thor intended to bring the scepter and the stone back with him to Asgard, he agreed to stay long enough for Tony and Bruce to study it. Strucker had used it to successfully create enhanced individuals, who knew what else it was capable of?
The large aircraft floated down onto the landing platform on the side of the tower, the tips of the wings folding into themselves as it neared the ground. Agent Maria Hill and Dr. Cho stood waiting for them upon landing. They were quick to remove Clint from the jet, moving him towards the medical area with Cho spitting instructions as they moved throughout the building. Natasha followed alongside the other employees while the others remained inside, soon to be joined by Agent Hill. She walked aboard, passing Thor as he carried a large box out of the craft.
"Lab's all set up, boss," she said, facing Tony. Y/N smiled in her direction and offered a small wave which was returned almost immediately.
Tony spun around in the chair facing out the window, pointing over to Steve as he spoke. "Oh, actually, he's the boss." Steve turned his attention over. "I just pay for everything and design everything and make everyone look cooler."
Steve, ignoring Tony's remark, stood up and turned to Maria. "What's the word on Strucker?"
"NATO's got him," Maria said.
"What about the enhanced?" he continued. Y/N raised their eyes up at the two of them, just now fully paying attention to the conversation.
"Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. Twins. Orphaned at 10 when a shell collapsed their apartment building." They could hear the sounds of shouting coming from the screen in Maria's hands. Video footage from a protest was playing, with the Maximoff twins front and center. They stood up from their seat and tried to keep up a calm front as they walked behind the two of them. They wanted to listen in for just a moment more before hurrying to Clint's side.
"Sokovia's had a rough history," Maria continued. "It's nowhere special but it's on the way to everywhere special."
"The abilities?"
"He's got increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. Her thing is neuroelectric interfacing, telekinesis, mental manipulation." They reached the elevator, Y/N a beat behind them. Steve turned to her with an odd look on his face, confused by the terms used to describe the twins. One of which being Y/N's fucking soulmate. "He's fast and she's weird."
"Well," Y/N said, "that sounds like a fun time." Maria turned to them with a raised brow. "I'm gonna go see Clint, you have fun with that."
Satisfied with the information they had indirectly received, Y/N broke off from Steve and Maria and headed down to the medical area where Clint was being treated. There was too much energy inside of them to wait around for the elevator to reach their floor so they opted for the stairs, instead. They were really beginning to think they should tell someone about the whole soulmate thing, keeping it private only made them feel seconds away from exploding. They could tell Clint, that could probably work out. He was there when it happened which meant he'd get an explanation for the way they acted, mostly why they were so distracted and failed to prevent his injury, but he had also met him. Pietro. That was his name. As they neared the medical area Dr. Cho worked her magic, they wondered if they would ever get to tell him their name.
"Hi, dad," they said once they reached the lab next to the room where Clint was being worked on.
"Hey, honey."
"How did you get here before me?" Steve asked, ascending the staircase up to the platform where Tony and Y/N stood.
"I'm fast and I'm stressed."
"You have fun with that."
"Ha, ha," they mocked. They stepped into the room with Clint, Natasha, and Dr. Cho. Clint was laid out on the table with a piece of machinery hovering over his wound, slowly regenerating the missing flesh caused by the blast. Natasha leaned down over his side, watching the machine work with a skeptical eye.
"Are you sure he's gonna be okay?" she asked. "Pretending to need this guy really brings the team together." Clint smiled a painful smile in response. She stepped back, almost bumping into Y/N behind her. She chuckled, throwing an arm around them while mumbling a quiet greeting.
"There's no possibility for deterioration. The nano-molecular functionality is instantaneous. His cells don't know they're bonding with simulacra."
"She's creating tissue," Bruce said, fascinated. Y/N grimaced at the thought but was happy that Clint would come out of this okay.
"If you brought him to my lab," Dr. Cho said, "the Regeneration Cradle could do this in 20 minutes."
At that point, Tony entered the small room holding several dark green beverages, each prepared with a straw. He handed one to each person in the room, all while confirming their presence at the upcoming party in the tower. While Dr. Cho at first was unsure, she was rather quick to change her mind at the mention of Thor. Y/N smiled and took a sip of their drink, and immediately regretted it. Clint smiled up at them from the table, sipping his own drink while watching them pretend to like it before placing it down to the side. Luckily for them, they did not need to keep up the act for long before everyone filed out of the room. Clint had been properly patched up and the attention of Dr. Cho was no longer needed. Y/N and Clint were the only ones left.
With a grunt, he pushed himself up into a sitting position on the table, drink in hand. He looked over at Y/N opposite him, whose eyes were glued to the floor. He nudged their leg with his foot, causing their eyes to snap up to face his. "Hey," he said. "What's up with you? You've been acting odd ever since the hit. Your shoulder okay?"
Testingly, they rolled their shoulder, it still hurt. "It's fine, just a little sore."
"Did something happen?" He took a sip of his drink. "You know you can talk to me."
"Um," they said. A small sniffle escaped them and they wiped at their nose. All of the emotions rolled over them at once, reaching to the point of tears they were desperately trying to hold back. "It happened." He didn't say anything in response, just looked at them expectantly as he tried to understand what they meant by it. "I had my Zing," they said, defeated. "With Pietro."
"Wait, who's Pietro?"
"The enhanced," they said. "The one that knocked into us before you got hit."
Clint was quiet for a moment before speaking. "Have you told Tony?"
"No. Not yet, at least." They looked back down at the floor, wringing their hands together. "I don't know what to do. What is he going to say when he finds out that my soulmate is one of Strucker's experiments? A willing one too!"
"He's your father, Y/N. He'll help you figure this out."
"Not yet."
At this point the tears were close to spilling over, keeping a steady voice took the strength of a warrior and it was all gone in the matter of a second. Wiping their eyes to keep from crying, they stepped forward and wrapped their arms around Clint. He returned the hug, rubbing their back and holding them close. They needed the comfort.
