(Y/N) sprinted from her room and above deck while in tears. She didn't want this life. She didn't want to marry a man just to ensure her family stayed rich. She didn't want to keep going anymore. So she made her way to the stern where Jack was laying on a bench, looking up at the stars, and having a smoke. That's when he heard sobbing and a pair of heels run past. It was (Y/N). He sat up and looked over at her. She stopped to catch her breath before looking at the railing. She walked over to it, making sure no one was watching, and climbed over the side. Once she was over, she turned to the ocean below, waiting to find the courage to jump off.
"Don't do it," Jack told her, slowly approaching
(Y/N) looked back at him, "Stay back. Don't come any closer."
Jack slowly walked over with his hand out, "Come on. Just give me your hand. I'll pull you back over."
"No! Stay where you are. I mean it. I'll let go."
Jack managed to get a little bit closer, nearly standing next to her after he tossed his cigarette overboard.
"No, you won't," Jack said, sure that she wouldn't
"What do you mean, no, I won't?" (Y/N) asked him, "Don't presume to tell me what I will and will not do. You don't know me."
"Well, you would have done it already."
"You're distracting me. Go away!"
"I can't. I'm involved now. You let go and I'm going to have to jump in there after you."
Jack took his jacket off and started to take his shoes off.
"Don't be absurd. You'll be killed," (Y/N) told him
"I'm a good swimmer," Jack told her
"The fall alone would kill you."
"It would hurt. I'm not saying it wouldn't. To tell you the truth I'm a lot more concerned about that water being so cold."
(Y/N) went quiet as Jack took one shoe off and started on the next.
"How cold?" (Y/N) asked
"Freezing," Jack said, "Maybe a couple of degrees over," Jack got his other shoe off, "You ever, uh... ever been to Wisconsin?"
"What?"
"Well, they have some of the coldest winters around. I grew up there near Chippewa Falls. I remember when I was a kid, me and my father, we went ice fishing out on Lake Wissota. Ice fishing is, you know, where you--"
"I know what ice fishing is!" (Y/N) said
"Sorry. You just seem like, you know, kind of an indoor girl. Anyway, I, uh... I fell through some thin ice and I'm telling you... water that cold, like right down there, it hits you like a thousand knives stabbing you all over your body. You can't breathe, you can't think. At least not about anything but the pain. Which is why I'm not looking forward to jumping in there after you. Like I said... I don't have a choice. I guess I'm kind of hoping you'll come back over the rail and get me off the hook here."
"You're crazy."
"That's what everybody says, but with all due respect, miss I'm not the one hanging off the back of a ship here. Come on. Come on, give me your hand. You don't want to do this."
(Y/N) looked at Jack's hand. She knew he was right. She didn't want to do this. She would've jumped off by now if she did. Hesitantly, she took Jack's hand and turned back around.
"I'm Jack Dawson," Jack introduced himself
"(Y/N) (M/N) (L/N)," (Y/N) said
Jack chuckled, "I'm going to have to get you to write that one down."
(Y/N) laughed at his comment. Jack started to help her back over the rail when (Y/N) accidentally stepped on her dress and slipped. Jack held onto her, making sure she didn't fall into the freezing water below. (Y/N) screamed as she hung off the edge of the ship, gaining the attention of some officers halfway across the ship. Jack tried to get her back up but she continued to slip on her dress. Jack assured (Y/N) that he still had her and that he wasn't going to let go.
He told her to pull herself up so she did while Jack helped her over the rail. (Y/N) made it safely over and Jack put her down. The officers then arrived and saw the scene in front of them. Which was (Y/N) laying on the ground with Jack on top of her with his jacket and shoes off. The officer told him to step back and not to move an inch.
Jack stood up while the officer told the two that were with him to fetch the master-at-arms. The Master-At-Arms arrived and arrested Jack while Cal arrived to comfort (Y/N). Until turning his attention to Jack saying how unacceptable all this was. Cal asked him what made him think that Jack would put his hands on (Y/N), fiancée. Jack looked at (Y/N) surprised. Cal forced Jack to look at him while (Y/N) tried to stop him.
"Cal, stop. It was an accident!" (Y/N) finally got a word in
"An accident?" Cal asked her
"It was. Stupid really. I was leaning over, and I slipped. I was leaning far over to see the, uh..." (Y/N) tried to remember what they were called
"Propellers?" Cal asked her
"Propellers and I slipped. And I would have gone overboard but Mr. Dawson here saved me and almost went over himself."
"You wanted to see... She wanted to see the propellers."
"Like I said, women and machinery do not mix," one of the men from First Class said
"Was that the way of it?" The Master-At-Arms asked Jack
Jack looked at (Y/N) who mouthed a 'please' to him.
"Yeah. Yeah, that was pretty much it," Jack confirmed
"Well, the boy's a hero then. Good for you, son. Well done," the First Class man congratulated him, "So it's all's well and back to our brandy, eh?"
Jack was let go and Cal went to take (Y/N) inside when the man asked if Jack should get anything as a reward. Cal turned to Lovejoy and told him to give Jack £20 for the rescue. (Y/N) wasn't impressed, asking if her life was only worth so little. Seeing that she was displeased, Cal offered something else: an invite to dinner the next day to tell their group about what Jack did for (Y/N). Jack was hesitant to be around the First Class but said yes.
Cal then left leaving Jack alone with Lovejoy. Jack asked Lovejoy for a smoke and he gave him one. Well, Jack took two. Lovejoy pointed out that Jack's shoes were still untied. But, before Jack could tie them, Lovejoy pointed out the small detail that everything (Y/N) told them seemed to happen so quickly yet Jack still had time to remove his jacket and shoes. Jack knew about that missing detail yet said nothing as Lovejoy walked away. Back in her cabin, (Y/N) was getting ready for bed when Cal walked in.
"I know you've been melancholy. I don't pretend to know why," Cal walked over to her dresser with something in his hand, "I intended to save this until the engagement gala next week. But I thought tonight."
Cal opened the box to reveal a big blue diamond in the shape of a heart.
"Good gracious!" (Y/N) said shocked
"Perhaps as a reminder of my feelings for you," Cal said
"Is it a..."
"Diamond? Yes," Cal put it around her neck, "It was worn by Louis XVI and they called it "Le Coeur De La Mer.'."
"The Heart of the Ocean," they both said
"Yes."
"It's overwhelming," (Y/N) said
"Well, it's for royalty. We are royalty, (Y/N). You know, there's nothing I couldn't give you. There's nothing I'd deny you if you would not deny me. Now open your heart to me, (Y/N)."
(Y/N) stayed quiet and looked at the giant stone around her neck in the mirror. To her, it felt wrong to wear a jewel of his size. She didn't want to. Which is why she never wore it again in front of Cal.
