With a snarled frown, Jeff's shakey hand nearly dropped his phone right then and there. What the hell... did this bitch really fucking hang up on me? With a loud growl, Jeff dialed the phone booth back with trembling hands. (Y/n), on the other hand, had been expecting the unsub to call her back, so she nearly laughed out loud as soon as her prediction had come true. Answering the phone yet again, the woman found it difficult to prevent herself from laughing. She could hear intense breathing on the other end, likely from the killer feeling furious at her toying around with him. Surprisingly, he decided to speak almost immediately this time around. "Do you think... this is a fucking game?" The woman intently listened to the growling voice full of rage.
With a genuine smile, the woman decided to wait a moment before responding. "Is this not a game to you?" She could practically hear the unsub seething at the mouth, a sure sign that her provocations were working just as planned. The more she riled him up, the more the investigator knew he would slip up, leading to his eventual capture.
Jeff was simply too in shock at the woman's lack of panic or hurry to get information out of him. Isn't this what she's been waiting for? So, why... why is she acting so indifferent? This made Jeff even angrier upon realization that she seemed to genuinely care less that he was on the other end of the line. (Y/n), upon not hearing a response back to her original question, decided she would try her luck again and hang the phone up for a second time. Although she was confident in her decision, she could feel her heart race as her legs shook in place. Even still, (Y/n) got nervous at the prospect of facing killers. It wasn't because she didn't feel confident in her abilities; on the contrary, the woman felt like a badass always. The evil that existed within humanity never ceased to amaze her in the worst ways, however. Hearing the phone ring once again, the investigator picked it up and acted indifferent, once again refusing to be the first to speak. Although seemingly insignificant, it was a power move that the woman was using to subconsciously let the killer know that he was wrong if he assumed he was controlling how this chase was going. Much to her surprise, however, this time around was very different as she heard cackles through the phone.
Jeff simply couldn't contain himself. He could certainly admit that he had been pissed off at the woman's lack of care. Upon thinking about their exchanges further, however, Jeff was able to calm down once he remembered that he held a trick up his sleeve that the investigator on the other line did not see coming. "To answer your question from earlier, yes. This is a game, (Y/n)." He grinned as he heard shuffling from the other end.
"I'm investigator (L/n) to you, killer."
"Oh? I don't know that you are, (Y/n). How does it feel? To be unable to catch me?" The woman would be lying if she hadn't admitted to herself that his questions got under her skin. The woman had a great sense of pride, and the killer had slowly been able to crumble it into pieces one by one.
Despite this, (Y/n) felt she was still dominant within their exchange. Thus, with a smile, she ran her fingers through her ponytail as she responded. "Merely catching you is not my goal, killer. Making you suffer and pay for those whose lives you've shamelessly taken is a start."
Feeling that the conversation wasn't heading towards an interesting direction, Jeff decided to top it all off with his ultimate trump card. "I forgot to ask... how's Sam lately, (Y/n)?" The woman felt the entire world surrounding her pause, as if she were the only being or thing that could move, as it all came crashing down around her. Gritting her teeth, the woman came to the realization that she could no longer dominate the conversation. (Y/n) needed to think through her voices very carefully regarding how to respond. One wrong word and things could come crashing down --- resulting in Sam's death, assuming that the unsub knew his whereabouts.
Moving the phone away from her face briefly, the woman breathed deeply in and out before responding with as much confidence as she could muster. "Now, how do you know who Sam is, killer?" Jeff grinned widely. Choosing her words carefully, I see. It's clear she's indirectly asking me where he is and what I've done.
"I think you should ask me directly if you have a question, doll. Don't dance around it."
The girl realized she must swallow her pride for the sake of preserving Sam's life, which made her feel ultimately powerless. "Where is Sam now, and is he safe?"
Jeff let out a satisfied sigh. "It's about time you realize who's in charge here, bitch. Did I mention I've been able to see you this entire time?" The woman froze in place as her eyes wandered around her. Refusing to turn around, (Y/n) soon understood that he must be watching from the street camera. So, he or someone he's working with must have access to surveillance. Jeff smiled triumphantly. This was all thanks to the favor that Ben owed him. "Destroy your phone, hang up the payphone, and walk down the street to the right. Throw your gun in the nearest trash can. Go past your vehicle and continue walking. A different vehicle will pick you up eventually. If you want to see Sam again, you will follow these instructions accordingly. I'll see you soon." (Y/n) squeezed her eyes shut tight as she contemplated these directions. Moving to hang up, she halted as she heard his voice once again. "Oh, and (Y/n)? I'm winning." Interrupting his cackle by slamming the phone into the receiver, (Y/n) felt tears begin to well within her eyes for various reasons, cementing the first time in years that she had gotten emotional.
Refusing to look at the camera at all, she began to follow the instructions he had told her from start to finish. Her phone now in shambles with her gun in a trash can, the woman continued walking down the road, her emotionless eyes observing her surroundings. Of course, the unsub had already gotten the better of her. There was no harm in still trying to spot him before he likely dragged her into the car, though. Arms crossed and feeling helpless, the woman pondered what his true motives were. Ah... it's likely he will kill me. With a bitter smirk presenting itself on her face, (Y/n) simply couldn't see any other reasoning for going this far just to capture her, with any result other than death. Regardless of this, she needed to know the truth behind Sam. Any normal human may have questioned the validity of the killer truly holding Sam hostage, but (Y/n) knew better. This unsub valued power and dominance more than all else. There was no way he didn't have Sam.
Up ahead, the woman rolled her eyes and let out an exasperated sigh as she made eye contact with the driver of a mysterious van up ahead. Way to be subtle... what an idiot. Directly approaching the van's passenger window, (Y/n) knocked on it before the driver unlocked the doors, signaling her to get into the back. The woman did as he silently asked, closing the door as she observed the driver as much as she could. This is not the killer, must be an accomplice. This male looks younger and has light brown hair rather than the black strands I saw within the street footage. His build is also much, much smaller as well. I can tell this even with the mask and glasses he's wearing. So, knowing this, the killer... is either at a different location, or in the seats behind me hiding. Taking a wild guess, the woman decided to speak loud enough for him to hear. "If you're in the backseat, you can come out now." Hearing shuffling behind her, the woman kept her eyes staring straight ahead before a knife was held to her throat, threatening her silently to not move. With a smirk of success, the woman felt a tiny bit of pride return to her. "So, we finally meet."
