Chapter 16 - One by one

Start from the beginning

Erik dissapeared into the maze with one last yell that echoed through the glade. The boys chasing after him were stopped by some others, letting no one enter the maze.

Y/n saw their stricken expressions and buried her face in Minho's chest. Holding onto him with desperation. She refused to cry, and let go of her boyfriend at once.

She slowly made her way to to the grieving boys by on of the maze entrances and kneeled next to them. The disbelief... fear... longing in their eyes was heartbreaking.

Another glader. Dead.

No one did anything meaningful the rest of that night. They went to bed and slept in silence, hearing many boys quiet sniffles as they mourned Erik.

Y/n simply stared outside thruogh the small hole that the griever had ripped in the wood wall. It shed light into homestead but no one complained. They flinched at every sound. Y/n barely felt safe, even in Minho's arms. A little light coudn't harm anyone.

They all got... maybe two hours of sleep. And that sleep was bad quality. Tense muscles and horrible nightmares. Waking up to someone simply shifting on their bed and fearing the worst of the sound.

Frypan didn't cook breakfeast. They had pieces of bread, candy, and orange juice. Such a low maintenance meal wasn't the scariest thing they woke up to, though.

Because the sun had dissapeared. The sky was grey and slightly dim. No blue... no sun. The gardens would die soon without the sunshine. The box supplies they had gotten with Teresa weren't what they ordered. The box hadn't gone down yet and Newt suspected they wouldn't get weekly supplies anymore.

The energy in the glade was very low in the morning. Every boy y/n talked with had horror in their eyes. Most of them had never seen a griever before. Y/n was as pale and tired as them.

She lay down in her bed and buried her face in her pillow. Growing cold, she pulled her blanket on top of herself and tried to get some rest.

Preparations for the next night had already started and y/n planned to help in just a moment. The best she could do was move around mattresses and distribute weapons.

Newt had decided everyone was to sleep in homestead. They would all get a weapon. The runners didn't enter the maze and every possibility of escape was being re-considered. Even climbing the walls.

When y/n went back outside, Minho was waiting for her. He didn't smile. They hugged with weak arms. Soaking up each other's support. Y/n swallowed hard, trying not to cry.

Minho patted her back and they headed to the storage to get weapons for each glader. The door to homestead was covered in scratches from the previous night, its hinges dangerously close to failing. Gally was working on it at the moment.

Y/n felt something lightly brush her on the head and she looked up in alarm. Seeing two gladers sanding down some wood to board the windows up with.

"Sorry!" They shouted down and y/n continued on with a wave.

Minho climbed down into the basement and gave her their one box of knives and small swords they had. Then he passed her the bundle of spiked wooden spears and climbed back up.

They sorted through the weapons. Y/n had never imagined they would have to use them, but Alby had thought of many things. The box was never empty. He even requested a cake once, but they were never given one.

Y/n picked up the bundle of spears and held it on her side. Minho carried the box of knives and they planned to go and give every glader something to defend themselves with.

But when they turned the corner around homestead they saw something that looked bad. A group of boys were crowded around the kitchen, staring up at the roof.

Teresa was standing on the roof, throwing down rocks and sticks, shouting at the boys. They were laughing a bit but annoyed as well.

Y/n shared an amused look with Minho and they rushed over through the grass and to the kitchen. The box and bundle forgotten on the grass.

Frypan was shouting at the girl to get off his roof and Newt had a baking pan held over his head. Y/n laughed at the brit and weaved her way through the crowd, shielding her head with her hands.

Y/n limped past the line of boys and cautiously looked up at the greenie. She was running out of rocks and looked scared. Y/n's smile faded and she shouted up at Teresa.

"It's alright Teresa, you can come down!" The boys behind y/n all nodded but then yelped and whooped in suprise when Teresa threw another harmless stick.

Y/n grumbled and stomped over to the fence Teresa must've used to get up on the roof. But she stopped herself, knowing she would make a fool of herself and fall.

"Can you just come down please?" Y/n asked Teresa again.

The girl on the roof thought for a moment, then slowly began to slide down the roof. She jumped to the ground.

Before y/n could walk over to the girl, Thomas had pushed thruogh the already dispersing boys and approached Teresa. They gazed long into each others eyes. A connection passing between them.

"Already getting married eh?" Minho stepped in between the two.

"You're in trouble for that love" Newt pointed at Teresa, who looked over at y/n for help.

Y/n walked over to them and tried to defend Teresa from any kind of punishment, but eventually had to simply leave and distribute the weapons with Minho.

Teresa had barely said anything after waking up, and the unfortunate turn of events in the glade prevented y/n from having time to become the girl's friend.

Still, before hunkering down in homestead, y/n visited Teresa from her jail, finding Thomas there already. They were speaking with hushed tones, and their conversation was odd. Like half of the things to be said were communicated in some other way.

Teresa looked at y/n thruogh the small window in the cabinet like jail. She smiled a bit and y/n sighed, glancing at Thomas. He looked disturbed, holding his head like it was hurting.

"You alright?" Y/n asked him.

She could tell he was hiding something but didn't press Thomas. He left to go get pain medication from the medjacks and try and sleep.

"Do you know him?" Y/n asked Teresa.

Her eyes were wide. She nodded, breathing lightly, shakily. Y/n raised her eyebrows.

"Everything is going to change" she said. Her words were ominous. Scary.

"Everything already has" y/n answered, then entered homestead and huddled against the wall with the other gladers.

Another boy was taken that night.

A/n:

"We remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends"
