I'd only been to my uncles' house near Boston once, a little over 4 years ago. It was right after they got their new identities and I had faked my death, and I helped them move into their new after they left Alabama. They lived in a small town called Hull, which is located on a skinny peninsula on the south edge of Boston Harbor. During the summer, like now, it is jammed with people at Nantasket Beach, a long stretch of sand that draws in families by the drove. During the winter, it was a sleepy place that you could almost hibernate in. With the cold, you may never want to go out, so it made sense!
A lot of the streets were very similar to one another. A row of charming houses, with a bigger house at the end overlooking the water. The harbor was protected from the Atlantic Ocean by Cape Cod, but storms could still get pretty rough up here. The water reminded me a little of the lake view we'd just left, and I liked it immediately. Would everyone want to find a place up here near my uncles? They were the only family any of us had, so maybe they'd like it. Otherwise, this would just be a quick stop, and then we'd move on to somewhere else when I was healthy enough to help out more.
We pulled up to the curb in front of their house just about dinner time, and I was happy to see that their house was looking good. Hell, the whole neighborhood was! Community pride was hitting this little street hard. I'd been tempted to call, just to make sure they were home, but I was a little nervous. Much like I'd done to the girls, I'd avoided them because of the way I'd been feeling about myself and what I was doing with my life. Now that I was committing myself to making things work with Willow, Lexie and Bella, I should do the same with my uncles.
"Can you get up those stairs?" Lexie wondered. That was a good question. I'd tried out some crutches, but because my left arm was hurt too, they didn't work well, so most of my time was just hobbling or hopping with assistance.
There was a concrete walkway with a single step up to the house, which then had three more stairs to get to the door. Thankfully, those had iron railings, so that might make it easier. "I think I can make it, yeah. But I'm not going to want to do it very often, so hopefully we can stay for a while. At least until I can walk."
Bella just scoffed. "You know they'll want you to stay. I'm more worried about them freaking out because you're bringing all of us!"
"No way," I assured her. "They love guests. If anything, they'll want to keep you. I think they'd love another kid."
"You're not a kid anymore, that's for sure!" Lexie snorted.
"Would they want some grandkids?" Willow asked shyly.
That was an easy one. "Yeah, I think they'd flip out. You wanna go make some?" It was the first time I'd ever suggested anything remotely like that, but if I was going to go all in with them, then I needed to start!
Both Willow and Lexie gaped at me in shock, while Bella screwed her face up in disgust. "Eww! None of that! Impressionable teen sitting right here! I'll have nightmares!"
The rest of us laughed out loud at that, and we finally got out of the car. Well, I was partially out of the car, standing on my right leg and leaning my right butt cheek on the seat still. Willow and Lexie helped me up the walk, and then I was able to use the railing on the right side and Lexie on the left to get up the last three steps before ringing the doorbell to my uncles' house.
And of course, they didn't answer. So, I rang it again.
"Did they know we were coming?" Bella asked. I hung my head at that.
"No. I was hoping to surprise them so they wouldn't yell at me for not visiting in so long," I admitted.
"But you're going to call now, right?" Lexie poked me in the right shoulder, making sure not to touch the left.
