The biggest female icon in metal's history: Donna Mondrian, guitarist of the top 2 best-selling thrash metal band of all time, accepted to answer some questions we had for her in her new studio in L.A.

What was it like growing up with Kirk Hammett?

Kirk was my best friend since day 1, we came pre-packaged. He is an awkward nerd, people often don't see that side of him. It's always me that orders food at restaurants to this day because he's scared to talk to the server. Yet he makes shows in front of thousands of people which is pretty ironic. *she laughed*

Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Hopefully not with Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. I don't want to be a part of that club.

In 1985 you were seen a lot with Megadeth's frontman Dave Mustaine, how would you describe your relationship with him at that time and today?

Well... At that time was a year ago, almost two, I would like to say we were well acquainted and we just lost contact over time. I think that's a question he would answer better than I do.

What impact did Cliff Burton's death have on you?

I was close to him, I was the last person he called on the phone before he passed away. It was shocking and a traumatic experience for everyone in both Ghost Harvest and Metallica. I think we were never the same since then. We all indulged in coping mechanisms that maybe weren't the best for us, especially me.

Yesterday, during the California music awards show Ghost Harvest won the prize for "outstanding album" but you didn't come at all, was it an act of rebellion or just a mindless action?

I'm receiving a lot of backlash from people calling me a "drunk" because of that event. We were called on stage at 2 p.m. but I wasn't even awake. How sad is that? Instead of people being worried for me because I was at my lowest, they just pointed a finger at me and laughed. I guess that's why so many artists end up killing themselves.

Do you like making music videos?

Not at all. I hate being in front of a camera, I never seem to know what to do. But the camera loves me.

How do you feel about people calling you a feminist?

I think the word feminist has always had this bad connotation in people's minds, especially people influenced by the patriarchy. But I'm not scared to be associated with it. I'm a feminist, I believe in equality, and I'm no better or worse than a man.

...

"They didn't even ask me a single question about guitar." I said annoyed to my manager while the crew of journalists packed their equipment and left.
