Romero
"Are you sure you don't want to come with us to talk to the lawyer? The court date is officially set for late March," Karine tells me as I do homework on the kitchen counter while waiting for the rice to finish cooking.
I lick my tongue. "Can't. I promised Carmen I'd help her study."
I look back down to my homework, but I feel Karine staring at me.
"Mhm," she hums.
I glance to her. "What?"
She smirks and shrugs. "Nothin'."
Her smirk is making me uneasy. I ignore her though and continue doing an a thousand calc question.
She giggles to herself as she pours herself coffee.
I purse and glance up to her again. "Karine."
She looks to me with that stupid smirk. "Hm?"
"The fuck are you doing?" I ask.
She shrugs again and takes a sip of her coffee, still smirking.
"Nothing...just...Romero got a girlfriend," she teases.
My stomach drops and lifts at the same time. "No I don't."
"Romero and Carmen sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-"
"Cala boca," I grit through my teeth, annoyed.
She smirks and continues singing that stupid preschool song.
"Karine, seriously, shut the fuck up."
"Don't tell a woman to shut the fuck up, you bitch."
"You're not a woman, you're my sister."
Her mouth drops open and she smacks my shoulder. I smirk and lean over to laugh in her face, bothering her.
She places her entire palm on my face and pushes me away. "Get away from me you stinky male."
I scoff. "I don't smell."
"You're a male, you automatically stink."
I roll my eyes and go back to my math problems.
"I have to go to work, Tía Vitoria has Mariana, see you later?"
I nod.
"Have fun losing your virginity loser," she sing-songs on the way out.
I stare at the door as she closes it behind her.
I force out a small laugh as my eyes go back to the homework, even though she's already gone.
I lift my hand and scratch the back of my neck.
Then I clear my throat, trying to get rid of the tightening sensation.
My fingers go to my neck and rub the sides.
Sweat starts forming on my skin, like the room got turned up 100 degrees.
