- EPILOGUE -

▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂

     One week.

One week and Liz hadn't seen any sign of Peter. One week since she'd had her injury and had to reside in the hospital to make sure her leg was okay to walk on.

A whirlwind of happenings, and her boyfriend was no where to be found. It worried her for more reasons than one.

He had a tendency to blame himself for things that were out of his control, such as Ben's death and even Captain Stacy's. And now Liz was hurt and in his head it was because of him. Maybe it was to an extent, but she didn't care.

She didn't care that it was down pouring around her, or the doctors voice in her head, telling her to take it easy. She was walking, well, more like hobbling, across the street to Peter's house with zero shits to give.

Confrontation. Her worst nightmare. Yet here she was, soaking wet from the rain and knocking on his door, ready to do just that.

It took a few moments, moments filled with thoughts of fear and worry. He hasn't even tried to talk to her for a week and this wasn't exactly going to be a walk in the park.

When he did finally show his face, all that anger in her seemed to of fled as the longing to just see him settled in again. He stepped outside, barely even able to look in her eyes with the sorrow and confusion practically seeping from them.

"Where have you been?" She muttered, his own features holding a conflicting expression of want and need.

He wanted more than anything to be able to be with her and at the same time keep her out of danger. But that was inevitable and he needed her to be safe.

"Hi." He spoke softly, swaying on the balls of his feet.

She didn't bother to respond for a moment, trying to decipher exactly what was going on inside his head, yet it seemed impossible. It's like he built up a wall that not even she could get past.

"I was in the hospital for three days." She said, and it was like the hardest kick to the gut. "May came to see me twice. My dad drove all the way here to make sure I was okay and I wasn't even sure he cared. Even Gwen came to see me and her father just died."

As she spoke, it turned more so a plea. One that begged him to look at her and see how he was effecting her. "Everyone came, but you."

He nodded, understanding that, yes, she was right. But he couldn't see her. Not in a hospital bed with an injury he thought he caused.

"Can't do this." He shook his head, hands shoved into his pockets as he brought his glossy eyes to meet hers. Her beautiful blue eyes that he couldn't stand seeing saddened like they were. "I can't do this. I'm sorry, I can't."

"What are you saying?" She asked, needing to hear what he wanted for sure. He couldn't be doing what she thought he was doing.

Alas, he was. "I can't see you anymore. I can't."

She scoffed, backing up a little as her heart cracked. It made her angry even. "It was one injury, and you're scared now? You were there, you made sure I was okay! I don't see the problem—"

"You could've lost your leg, or worse!" He raised his voice, hoping she'd realize he was no good and they'd never work. At least that's what he was telling himself.

     "You could've died, Liz!"

And there it was. The proof she didn't want to find. He blamed himself and now he was punishing the both of them because he was scared.

She let her tears fall freely staring dead into his eyes with a heartbreaking expression he would've sobbed at if he wasn't trying to so hard to keep his composure. "I thought you cared more about me than to let some stupid inconvenience ruin everything."

He let his head hang at that. Yeah, it was true, but he also cared about her way too much to let her be in danger just because he was in love with her.

No verbal response was an answer in itself and Liz wasn't going to stick around to let the rest of her heart shatter.

"Bye, Peter." She says quietly, turning and walking down the steps.

He watched her walk away, knowing she wouldn't look at him again with the smile he loved so much. He ruined everything.

But it was better this way, even if her heart was collateral damage to his own frightening thoughts.

     She was safer without him.
