Sammy

Slowly walking into school Sammy stopped in the hallway when he saw Maci clinging all over Evan. Frowning, he knew it shouldn't bother him since he was the one who said they should forget everything. He secretly wished that Evan would have reacted differently than he did, however his answer made him know. He knew he needed to get over the football player, because nothing will ever happen. He was stupid for thinking something ever would.

All of a sudden he was being shoved hard in the back. Looking up he saw Sasha glaring at him, making him put his head down. Walking down the hallway he heavily sighed while making his way to his first class. He was able to avoid eye contact with everyone in class and in the hallway, all the way until lunch.

While at lunch he slowly started eating a blueberry muffin, staring blankly at the wall. "Hey there," looking up he saw Lea eagerly smiling at him while plopping down into the seat next to him. "I've barely talked to you all day. Are you okay?"

"Evan knows I like him."

"Oh I know."

Raising an eyebrow he swallowed a giant bite of muffin before asking, "How do you know?"

"Because I was the one who told him."

"What?" Sammy yelled while jumping up, making everyone in the cafeteria turn and look at them. "Why would you do that?"

He watched as she tried to get him to sit down while saying, "He needed to know how you felt."

"That wasn't your decision to make."

"Sammy, I only did it because I love you. And I know you've cared about him for so long."

Feeling angry tears rush down his cheeks he stared at his best friend in front of him, not believing that she would actually do something like that. "I don't want to talk to you anymore."

"No Sammy, I-"

"I don't want to talk to you anymore!" He yelled while walking out of the cafeteria, wishing that he could be sucked into a black hole.

Instead of finishing the rest of the day he ran out to his truck, driving home. When he got home he walked inside, seeing the mail sitting on the coffee table. A certain letter stood out to him the most, a certain letter from MIT. Feeling his heart start to beat faster from anticipation he eagerly opened the letter while sinking down onto the couch. The smile that had made its way onto his face instantly vanished when he read,

Dear Mr. Pearl,

We regret to inform you...

Not bothering to read more he threw the letter across the room, burying his face into a nearby pillow. He hadn't even noticed someone else was in his house, not noticing until someone sat down next to him. Looking up he saw the worried eyes of his father staring back at him.

"Are you okay?" He asked while wrapping his long arms around his body.

"No. Nothing is okay," Sammy cried while burying his face into his father's shirt.

"I'm not sure what's going on, but it must be something bad if you ditched the last half of school. What's going on?"

Wiping his nose he stared blankly at the wall in front of him, the wall that had their family portrait on it. Everyone looked so much happier in it, why couldn't things go back to the way they used to be? "Lea told Evan I've liked him for a long time. I didn't get accepted into MIT. I have no other friends to talk to and I... I-"

He wasn't able to continue since he was crying once again, everything sounding so much worse when he said it out loud. "I'm so sorry Sammy," his father said while kissing the top of his head. "I know this isn't something you want to hear but listen to me," he said while tilting Sammy's face up so he could look into his eyes. "You are an amazing individual. You're going to pull yourself out of this, even though it doesn't seem like it right now. You'll get accepted into another school, you're a brilliant kid. There will be guys who want to be with you, rather than being stubborn. I know that you won't listen too much to these words right now but please think about them. I'll make you a deal. I'll go make you something to eat, you go snuggle up into some warm blankets and think about what I said, and I won't make you go to school tomorrow. Deal?"

Slowly nodding Sammy whispered, "Deal." He watched as his father gave a tiny smile before giving him another hug.

"I love you Sammy."

Slowly getting off the couch he made his way up the stairs before crashing down into his bed. As his head hit the pillows he instantly fell asleep, emotionally worn out.

Snuggling deeper into the blankets around him, Sammy yawned for the second time before allowing his eyes to close once again. Just as he was about to fall back asleep there was a soft knock on his door. Looking up he saw Teddy walking into his room, a small smile on his face. "Hey."

"If Lea sent you to talk to me I don't want to hear it."

"No, she didn't," Teddy said while sitting on the edge of his bed. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay."

Instead of responding he simply rolled onto his back before lazily staring at the ceiling. "How am I supposed to be okay? I didn't get into MIT. I humiliated myself in front of someone I used to care about. Nothing is going right. Is that what you want to know, how awful my life is? Because yes it's horrible."

"Sammy, I came over here because I consider you a friend. I wanted to make sure you were okay. I brought you some cookies," he said while pulling out a bag from his book bag. "Do you need anything?"

Staring blankly at the cookies in front of him, Sammy sighed before rolling away from Teddy. Closing his eyes he wrapped his blankets more around his body before saying, "No."

With that he heard Teddy sigh before gently patting his shoulder. "There are other people who care about you Sammy, more than you think." When he was done Sammy heard him leave the room, making more tears form in his eyes.

Evan

"How is he?" Evan asked the moment Teddy came back into his car.

"Not good," Teddy said before starting the car and driving down the long driveway.

Sighing Evan looked out the window, feeling a frown form onto his face. "I didn't mean to hurt him so much," he said while they were pulling into his driveway. After getting out of Teddy's car he walked into the front door, instantly starting to walk up the steps.

"Well you did hurt him," he heard Teddy say from behind him. "He actually cared about you, it sounds like a lot. He also told me he didn't get into MIT, everything seems to be coming down onto him all at once."

"Well what do you want me to do?" Evan angrily asked while stopping outside his door. "I'm not going to change the way I think, the way I've always thought, for some guy."

"Sammy isn't some guy!" Teddy angrily said while throwing his hands up into the air. "And you know that. Sammy's special, and yes he makes you think a different way. But that's good Evan! You can't be so one minded."

Rubbing his hands through his hair Evan sighed while angrily rubbing his hands over his face. "Look Teddy, I'm not going to change the way I've been living my life for some guy I might like!" When he said that, his eyes instantly widened as he stepped back, leaning against the wall.

"You like a guy?" Turning around he saw Maci standing in his doorway, her eyes wide.

"What? No, I don't!"

"Are you gay?"

"NO!" He yelled while closing his eyes as his breathing was coming out quicker and quicker. "I don't like guys Maci, I like you." Even he couldn't miss the way his voice didn't sound that true.

Looking over at his best friend and his girlfriend he frowned before making his way down the stairs. Running out towards his car he got in and simply started driving, not stopping until he was sure he was out of the state.
