Weiying stared up at the house in wide-eyed wonder despite his exhaustion as Lanzhan brought the rental car around to the top of the circular driveway. The lamps posted around the edge of the drive pushed back the late-night shadows, casting their soft orange glow against the house’s facade. It was the largest beach bungalow Weiying had ever seen, with a wrap around porch, sloping tiled roofs, and multiple stories.

“Holy shit,” he breathed. “You could’ve warned me that the house was this... huge .”

Lanzhan looked over at him with a slight grimace as he put the car in park. “I haven’t been home in a few years. I...sort of forgot.” He killed the engine. “Are you ready? I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to knock the fuck out.”

Weiying couldn’t help but chuckle. “I agree with you.”

Lanzhan quickly unbuckled and got out of the car. He unlatched his own seatbelt, but before he could move, Lanzhan was there, opening his door for him. Weiying looked up at him with a shy smile, his cheeks warming with a blush.

“Thank you,” he murmured.

The corner of his lips pulled up and he held out his hand. “You’re welcome.”

Weiying put his hand in his and he helped him out of the car. He held onto him as they walked up the porch steps, relishing the feeling of his hand in his in a new way: every time he had held him before, it was under the guise of their fake relationship. It felt nice to do it for real.

Madam Lan had told them before they left Yunmeng Island that he had arranged for the caretakers to set everything up for them. The house had been cleaned and the kitchen well-stocked in preparation. Xichen had told them that there was no need to bring anything they had taken to Yunmeng; he and  Meng Yao had provided everything that they would need, and would take their things back to Nie City for them. Weiying was skeptical of what Xichen had meant by everything , but there wasn’t anything he could do about it now.

Lanzhan fetched the spare key from beneath the potted plant by the door. Weiying was surprised to see that the plant was in bloom despite the late season, although he could already sense the change in climate: the air was heavy with moisture and considerably warmer than Nie City. He had ditched his sweater at the airport, and Lanzhan had had his coat as well.

He unlocked the door and the two of them stepped inside. The caretakers had left a few lights on for them, so at least they weren’t fumbling around in the dark.

Weiying took in the impressive foyer, decorated with rich pieces of art, carved mahogany furniture, and more potted plants, all lush and in bloom. There was a flight of stairs that led up to the open second floor, where he could see more doors lining the walls. He looked through a wide doorway off to the left and made out the shape of furniture in what must have been the living room. Another doorway to the left revealed another sitting area, this one accentuated by a lot of windows that allowed the pale moonlight to illuminate the room.
