They reached the museum intact, though Joel hung back, his eyes on the looming building covered in layers of cordyceps.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me." Ellie muttered; her eyes wide.
Billie felt the same uneasy dread. She'd never been through the museum before and had no clue what waited inside.
"There's a way across on the top floor." Tess said, glancing at Billie as if to reassure her.
Billie took a step forward. "Guess that's better than dying." She said dryly.
"Billie, Joel and I have done this before. It's fine." Tess replied, trying to sound confident.
Joel approached the entrance, tapped at a withered cordycep with the butt of his gun, then slammed it once to test it.
"It's bone dry." He said. "It could mean they're all finally dead in there."
He gave Billie's shoulder a gentle nudge, signaling her to ready her flashlight and gun.
"Oh, man." Ellie exhaled.
Joel lifted his own flashlight. "Marlene pack you one of these? Or just sandwiches?"
"Yeah." Ellie replied, rummaging through her backpack.
"All right, listen up." Tess instructed. "More ground rules: we're moving slowly. If anything happens, you stay behind us, and ya stay there. Got it?" She fixed Ellie with a firm look.
Ellie nodded. "Yes."
Billie cocked her gun, catching Ellie's side-eye.
"I have a spare hand." Ellie quipped.
"Congratulations." Joel replied, moving toward the entrance without a glance back.
Joel peered inside and gave them the signal to enter. They crept in, the atmosphere darker and heavier than Billie had imagined. Dust hung in the air, mingling with spores and debris; the infected must have had a field day here, she thought bitterly.
