It's 3 in the morning and I cannot sleep. Tossing and turning in my bed, I try to find a comfortable spot, and it seems that the more I stay awake, my mind keeps on going to the conversation I had with Coraline earlier. I decide to get out of bed and drink some water.
I creep downstairs so that I don't make noise and wake mom up. I hadn't realized how thirsty I was until I started drinking the fresh cold water. My mind goes to the conversation we had earlier.
If my father belonged to the Sea of Cordelia and my mother, to the Land of Alastair, does that mean I have magic? Because my father was a merman while my mother was one of the knights the King had by his side. Does she have magic? As I am thinking of this, I realize a few things.
My heart skips a beat as I start thinking about the time I accidently compelled my neighbor's kid into bathing in muddy water without even realizing what I was actually doing, this happened when I was around 7 years old. Then suddenly I am reminded of the time I had plucked a rose off of the stem of the flower to give my mom after school and when I didn't have money to buy some crackers from the school cafeteria. I looked at the rose not believing my luck and thought of it to be the money I needed.
"Oh hey, that's the money I needed. Here you go, enjoy!" The cashier had said, taking the rose from my hand and as shocked as I was, I didn't think much of it. Until now when I realized that I do have magic. I am dumbfounded by my thoughts as I take out the sketch from my pockets and I look at it more closely in hopes of finding something that I may have had missed the first time I saw the picture. He looks beautiful.I never believed in sea creatures like fairies, elves and goblins, let alone believe in mermaids and mermen. Mom looks even better, with her straight, long and shiny hair falling over her shoulders. Her cheekbones prominent as she stares into Hector's eyes with passion. What's even weirder is that I belong there. I am the child that belongs to the Land of Alastair and the Sea of Cordelia. As I am lost in my thoughts, staring at the magnificent picture, I notice a little note at the very bottom of the rusty and torn page. It is written in calligraphy and has a few ink splashes which makes it harder to read.
Let her cry, let her weep,
His decision was always concrete.
Murder once, murder twice,
In the end vengeance will always rise."Spooky..." I whisper. I am so astonished that I didn't see the paper that has fallen to the floor. I pick it up and realize it is a map, a huge map. Not just an ordinary map, it is the map that might get me to the Land of Alastair.
My stomach feels funny, I am terrified by what I am going to do but I am also very excited. I put the two balled up, crinkled pages back inside my bag and swiftly go back upstairs to my restless sleep.
The next day at school was just as boring as any other day. I didn't pay much attention to any of the classes as I was drained from yesterday's uneasy sleep. After school I throw my books in the locker and make my way outside to meet Wyatt and Livie and tell them about everything Coraline had told me and plead them to come along with me, which of course, wasn't why I originally called them here.
However, as I make my way through the school grounds, I spot Adrik with his sickening group of friends making their way towards me.
"So, we heard you got into Harvard. Is that true?" He asks annoyingly as his group circles around me. I try to sound calm even though I'm aware of how fast my heart is beating in my chest.
"Why, is it so hard to believe? Or are you upset that you didn't get in?" I hear a few gasps around us. He looks at me with rage rising in him and nods to his puppet, Luke, as he grabs my bag pack and starts to unzip it.
I watch in horror as he dumps everything from my bag on the ground while his entire friend group starts to kick dirt into it with a nasty smile on their faces. It makes me want to punch Adrik right in the face, not caring about the consequences. If he thinks he has power over me, he is so wrong. As I start to gather my belongings and stuff it into my bag, I notice the sketch and the map on the ground, but Luke is too fast.
"Who is that? You draw?" He asks, perplexed. I snatch it from him. I don't know why but I feel like he knows something about it. I feel weak. I feel vulnerable because he saw it. I wheel out of there as fast as I can, aware of how hot every part of me feels with shame. Aware of how red my ears and face are. I can feel their eyes on me, and I try not to trip and fall.
As I turn the corner, I stop to catch my breath.
Inhale.

Exhale.
I spot Wyatt and Olivia running towards me. She hugs me tight,
"I was worried last night, what happened?" She asks, holding me at an arm's length and looking at me closely. They seem to realize something's wrong.
"Who do I need to spit on?" Wyatt breaks the silence and I let out a small laugh.
"No one as of now," I tease as he pouts, crossing his arms over his chest like a little kid.
After catching my breathe, we go to a nearby park and sit on the cold benches and I take out the sketch and the map that I had found."Mock me all you want but I'm going to travel to the Land of Alastair tonight after midnight," As I explain the whole situation to them, how I happen to be a dead merman's daughter, I watch their faces change. From unexplainable worry to confusion to terror.
"Okay, this is insane. Wake up kid, you're no prankster." Livie says, snapping her fingers in front of my face.
"I'm not joking around Livie!" I exclaim in an attempt to somehow make her believe my crazy hallucinations. Wyatt just watches the two of us with ecstasy glittering in his eyes. At least someone gets me.
"Dude think logistically. What about Harvard? What about your mom? And what about us? You can't just disappear into a nonexistent fantasy world, you idiot!" Livie whisper yells as I ponder over everything for a minute.
"You guys are coming with me. Let's just get through with 'Plan A' first and once we get there, we will decide what to do next." I tell them with hope in my eyes.
As much as I feel stupid for even considering going to a world where no one knows me, or they know me but don't know if I exist by now, I am ready. I want to know what the war was about, why it had broken out and why this certain witch called Lady Agatha cursed the Sea of Cordelia.
"Let's rendezvous at the park tonight at midnight!" Wyatt says after realizing Livie and I won't speak further. I look at him and smile.
"You know, I always thought you were absurd. I always found you to be funny and childish but now I know that you use your brain too sometimes." I say, shoving my elbow into his stomach and breaking out into a laugh.
