Amore Mia

‘I found my soulmate, I found my true love, I found my one and forever, and now I may lose her forever.’ Nathan thought back to a quote he once read as he sat next to Amore's bed, holding onto her hand while the constant heart monitor echoed in the background.
A week has passed. After the surgery, they transferred Amore back home. According to the doctor in Rio, the surgery was a success. Amore was shot in the chest on her right side, one of her lungs collapsed and they had to give her a blood transfusion. Likely Dr. Martin was there to donate his blood to her. According to Dr. Martin and the other doctors, she should have already woken up, but she was still in a semi-coma.
“Son, please. You need to eat something and get some sleep. When is the last time you bathed? Look at your clothes… I will sit with her until you get back. I promise I will not leave her side. Just, please go take a bath and get some sleep, you look terrible.” Nathan's mom said as she stood by the hospital door looking worried at her son. Her heart was hurting for her son and daughter-in-law. This was a parent’s worst nightmare seeing them like this.
Nathan turned his head towards his mom. He has lost weight, his eyes had bags underneath from the lack of sleep and he was still wearing the same clothes.
“Hello, Mom… I can't… what if something happens again and I'm not here? I… I can't.” Tears started running down his cheeks, he wiped them away with the back of his hand and turned back towards Amore.
“Oh, Nathan. This is not your fault. I know you both love each other dearly. Amore will be heartbroken if she wakes up and sees you like this. If not for me then for her. I brought you some clothes. You can take a shower here and sleep on the couch. I promise to wake you if she wakes up.” Nathan's mom said as she walked towards Nathan and then placed a bag at his feet while placing her hands on his shoulders to give him some form of comfort.
Nathan lifted Amore's hand and kissed the top of it, then kept her hand by his lips as he spoke to his mom, “Mom… when I saw her motionless body in Caity's arms… I thought she was dead. At that moment It felt like my whole world stopped.” Nathan looked at Amore's face. He gently placed her hand down covering it with her blanket. He reached out toward her cheek and gently started caressing it.
“I know Nathan, she will wake up. She is one strong woman.” Nathan's mom looked at Amore amazed. No wonder her son has loved this girl for so long.
“Okay fine.” Nathan sighed, then closed his eyes as he lowered his head, “but please scream if something happens,” Nathan said in a none negotiable voice.
“Yeah yeah, I know… now go.” She patted him on the back.
Nathan slowly got up, kissed Amore on the forehead, grabbed the bag, and quickly walked towards the bathroom.
“Steven, you can come in now, ” Nathan's mom called out toward Nathan's father, who was standing outside the door.
Steven walked into the room taking his seat next to his wife.
“I can't bare to see him like this Rachel. It breaks my heart that I can't do anything.”
“You already did everything you can Steven. You and Martin called for the best doctor's out there. Martin, himself is one of the best but still, you guys called everyone out there. She will wake up, you will see.” Rachel took Amore's hand and gently stroked it with her thumb. “This poor girl has been through a lot, Steven. She is one strong girl. I'm so proud of our son for making her our daughter-in-law.” Rachel beamed with joy at Amore.
“You can say that again,” Steven said in agreement.
Amore's fingers slightly moved.
“Steven… Steven… did you see that… she moved her fingers… see I told you. Quickly go call the doctor.” Rachel said excitedly.
Steven nodded then quickly got up and walked out of the room to call the doctor. A few seconds later a doctor came hurrying in with Dr. Martin behind him. Rachel stood up and walked to the side so the doctor could do his examination. Steven walked into the room and joined his wife. They all waited eagerly for good news from the doctor. Nathan came out of the bathroom looking concerned at all the people standing around the room. He then instantly walked towards Amore.
“What… What happened?” Nathan asked nervously.
“She moved her fingers, Nathan… I think she is waking up, see I told you everything is going to be alright.” Rachel said excitedly.
Nathan stopped next to Amore's bed looking at the doctor while asking his mom, “She did?”
“Yes, Nathan,” Rachel replied.
“Her vitals look good. She is healing beautifully. Her body went through a lot. She will wake up on her own time. You guys just need to be patient.”
“Thank you, doctor,” Nathan replied.
“I will walk you out.” Dr. Martin told the doctor.
Dr. Martin walked up to Nathan and pressed his shoulder, then walked out with the doctor.
“Don't you dare take that seat, Nathan! ” Rachel told him sternly. "Go sleep on the couch.”
Nathan narrowed his eyes at his mom and then looked at his dad.
“Can't help you, son, you know we love you dearly. You have to rest. You need your energy to help Amore when she wakes up.”
That seems to have gotten Nathan's attention. He walked to his dad and hugged him, then Nathan turned to his mom and wrapped her tightly in a hug.
“Thank you. I love you both.” Nathan said.
“We know.” She smiled and then patted him on the back.
Nathan pulled back from the hug and then walked to the couch, he laid down and closed his eyes.
Rachel and Steven took their seats next to each other again. Rachel turned to Steven and grabbed both hands excitedly.
“Oh, Steven I can’t wait for our grandbabies,” Rachel whispered screamed at Steven.
“Darling, the poor child hasn’t even woken up and here you are talking about our grandchildren.” Steven smiled at Rachel while tilting his head.
Rachel waved Steven away with her hand. “It’s just a matter of time before she wakes up. Can’t a grandmother dream about her grandbabies.?” She looked at Steven questionably.
Steven just shook his head and said nothing further.
“Knock…knock” The sound of someone knocking came from the door. They both turned to look who it was. Carolyne stood at the door with a bunch of flowers.
“Uh… Sorry Sir and Madam… am I intruding?” Carolyne looks nervously at Steven and Rachel.
“Of course not darling… Come in… Steven was just about to go and get us coffee.”
Steven looked confused over at his wife
“I were?” Steven asked puzzled
“Yes, you were. Now go…” Rachel said through gritted teeth.
Steven shook his head and got up from the chair. “Whatever you say, darling.” Steven walked passed by Carolyne at the door.
Carolyne walked in stopping next to Amore’s bed. Carolyne felt a lump in her throat as she looked at her best friend. Why must all this crap happen to Amore…
Rachel looked at Carolyne. She knew Carolyne had something on her heart and wanted to be alone with Amore,
“I’m going to the bathroom, please watch over her for a while until I get back. PLEASE don’t leave until I get back, otherwise, Nathan will throw a fit if he sees Amore unaccompanied… “ Rachel said as she stood up not waiting for Carolyne’s response then walked towards the bathroom.
“Yes… Yes of course.” Carolyne answered.
Carolyne took Rachel’s seat and gently took Amore’s hand in hers.
“Aija Mia… you better wake up. I can’t bare seeing you so weak in this bed… I… I… can’t lose you, Mia… We just found each other again. It hasn’t been long enough…” Carolyne said as the tears ran down her cheeks. “You better wake up… Do you know what hell I have been living through this past week? Why did you have to rescue that Cat person… She and James are together every day… Every day Mia… You are here because of her… I just want to strangle her every time I see her… but then I think about you lying here because of her, and if I kill her, you getting hurt will be for nothing. What do you think you are Mia? Bulletproof? Your human Mia! Human! You can't save everyone. Anyway… so you see it’s your fault … Mia.… James doesn't even argue with me anymore… Oh Mia I need you! Please wake up!" Carolyne pressed her head on the bed while tight gripping Amore's hand as she wept.
“Uhhh… who died... Ugh… why are you crying like that? You sound ugly when you cry like that…” Amore said in a groggy voice.
Carolyne instantly sat up straight and shouted
“AMORE?”
