A Splatoon Rainbow Quest au:

The Steves could be Inklings.

And Sabre could be an Octoling. (Origin, The First Curse, Genesis, Dream, Judge, and Dread are Octolings as well. The Biome Steves possibly being Octoling as well, or just Obsidian Steves)

Or something like that-

Like the Steves are stuck with one ink color (color representing their specific type of usual color)

The Steves still have their usual powers and specialties of course.

But Sabre-

Sabre is able to change ink color.

Sabre just appears through the portal and everyone's like: :0 what is that????

While Red Steves (and the one at the beginning) are like: Oh! I thought Octolings all died out.

Yep! Lore wise for this Au would be that after Steve Legends the Octolings just outright vanished, just straight up poofed out of existence. So everyone thought they died mostly Red Steves and everyone else forgot about them (except for well *points at Void, Rainbow Red, and Faceless, they of course know what Octolings are.)

I guess darkness could be a mixture of the fuzz from Splatoon 3. Or a the sanitation that Tar Tar did in the octoling expansion pack- or mayhaps a mixture of both???

Also Octolings are taller than Inklings sooo- Tall Sabre!

Lore time:

Sabre comes from the normal Splatoon universe but before Octolings go up to the surface. He's heard about Inklings and starts becoming fascinated about the surface.

But due to him being under DJ Octavio's control (aka because of the hypnoshades) he never was allowed to head to the surface.

He managed to break free of the control of the hypnoshades (via tripping down some stairs) once he was free he began exploring. After being unable to actually figure out how to get to the surface so he just wanders about down below, avoiding every other Octolings due to most still being under the hypnoshades influence.

He watches the performance of the squid sisters during the Calamari Inkantation and watched in fascination as some of the other Octolings are freed from the control of the hypnoshades.

So once the other Octolings managed to get to the surface, he followed them. He's adores the clouds and stars, he likes collecting objects and making stuff out of the things he collects.

He proceeded to get curious about the ocean. He gets close to the water but far enough that he can't touch him, so he collects shells and washed up pieces of coral.

He trips over a rock and falls into an incoming wave, but instead of being hurt or dissolving, he stays intact, nothing happens to him.

Much to his surprise and others who were on the beach. He doesn't live in one of the big cities but he lives in a small town. So it spread that he could touch water and people looked at him as though he was an even bigger freak (doubly so since he's an Octoling).

He was called a curse. However Sabre thinks it's amazing that he can touch water so he vanished from the town after grabbing a lot of water proof items and then he left. Ran away to the beach.

He took a step into the water to double check and still nothing happened so he swam into the water. To his joy he can breathe underwater and see underwater.

So he explored the waves and sea. This is how he found the ruins and catacombs, as well as a ghostly blue Inkling. Due to his curiosity of Inklings, he followed it. Once he entered the catacombs the water vanished and so did he. (He proceeded to land on his face inside Reds home.)

[While he was exploring the sea, the news of an Octoling who could touch water spread to the big cities, however it was pushed aside and told as a sorta myth and even a horror story among the big cities. A story to tell the kids of a cursed Octoling whose body became one with the sea, who if they got to close the spirit of the Octoling would wash them away, all in an attempt to make sure their kids didn't die by trying to act out the 'fake story']

Once Sabre was found by Red, he was immediately taken to the Orange Steves, and they all watched in amazement as Sabre changed his ink color to be a mixture of orange and red.

I see Sabre as a Blanket Octopus type of octoling.

I don't know what weapons he'd use.
