chapter nineteen ━ the start of something new
( season four, episode one )

❝ i never say no to food. ❞

"𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐄, 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐆𝐄𝐓 your backpack?" Abby asked with a sigh, zipping up her niece's lunchbox. "Or we're gonna be late for school—again. And other parents are judgy when we're late—" She turned around to find Annie sitting at the kitchen island, looking up at her with her big, brown eyes. "—oh. Thank you. How do you walk so quietly?"

"Do I have to go?" Annie whined, dropping her head on the table while Abby filled her thermos with coffee and glanced at her. "Everybody is just so annoying."

"It's first grade," she replied with a frown, collecting her bag. "Just how annoying can people be?"

Annie shrugged, following her aunt through the open door. "You know how you were explaining your interns to me earlier?" Abby nodded while locking the door and balancing her belongings in her arms. "It's like that, just... younger."

Abby chuckled in amusement. "Oh, you are definitely related to me."

Once she had dropped Annie off at school—and the promise that they would get ice cream after dinner—Abby made her way to the hospital. The minute she walked inside, she was soon cornered by Mark.

"You disappeared," he said and she raised her eyebrows, glancing at him as she walked into the attendings' lounge. "I asked the chief where you were two and a half weeks ago, and he said you took them off."

"You counted how long I was gone?" she asked, shaking her head. "Yeah, I took them off. What is wrong with you? You're acting like I died and came back to life. I was only in New York."

"New York?"

Abby nodded. "Yep. You know, the place where I was raised and effectively ran away from as soon as I could?" She dropped her bag in her cubby before changing into her scrubs. "I figured I'd show Annie where her family comes from. Well, the Thompson side. Adam was kind enough to not know where her mother's family was from."

Mark hummed and leaned against the wall. "Well, how was it?"

"I'm just glad to be back," she replied with a sigh, wrapping her stethoscope around her neck and letting her brown hair fall down her back. "Let's leave it at that."

He followed her out of the attendings' lounge towards the nurse's station, where she found Richard and Derek already standing together. She briefly heard the chatter of a drink.

"Someone mention a drink?" Mark asked, walking over to them. "'Cause I'm in."

Derek shook his head. "Nobody mentioned a drink."

"You mentioned a drink," Richard pointed out.

"I did not mention a drink."

Abby glanced between the two former friends, seeing Derek walk away from Mark. "So, how's your quest to win him back going?"
