My name is Amethyst Opal Wilson. I'm 23 years old.. and I am deaf. I wasn't born deaf but I started going deaf at the age of 3. However, I didn't get my cochlear implant until I was 9, so throughout that time my family, friends and I learned ASL and that is the language I communicate best in.

Usually, I travel with my mom so that she could help me understand other people and translate what I'm saying, but since I am 23 now, I decided that it is time for me to learn how to speak for myself and manage in the real world.

I've been dying to go shopping, so I started off my day by going to the mall, going through the stores. Right now I'm in target stocking up on some skincare products, I walked down the aisles looking for the regular Dr. Thayers toner that I use but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I squatted down, reading all the labels trying to find it but then I realized there was a group of at least 5 men staring at me. I assumed they were staring at my butt because I was wearing a mini skirt and a crop top, I guess I should've expected it.

But last time I checked I was in the aisle by myself. They stayed in my peripheral vision for a few minutes and at this point I'm wondering why they won't leave.

I stand up, my heels clacking on the floor as I do, I look at them and ask, "Can I help y'all?"

"Whatchu ... shawty?" I hear some of what the man says but not all of it.

"Huh?" I said.

He stepped a little closer to me and repeated himself, "I said whatchu drunk shawty, ya voice sound all slurred 'n shit and whatchu doing witcha hands, who you reppin?" He squinted at me.

I rolled my eyes at his ignorance, "I'm not drunk. I'm deaf, and I'm doing ASL, it's sign language."

"Well ion speak allat shit, so chillat."
