i just wanted to get my shift over with.
maybe i would be able to get home in time to make dinner. i worked at a small café that doubled as a library or a book nook. we'd have regulars, mostly people my age, come to study or just to hang out. sometimes i'd see my classmates. i was working the library today, organizing books and dusting off unused shelving.
my head was in the clouds while i waited for the doorbell to ring, signifying any sort of entrance or departure from the shop. i stared blankly at the glass door, the sun spilling into the building from various angles.
ding! i snapped out of it as i saw one of the most beautiful boys i had ever laid my eyes on. it honestly felt like i was being blessed by the gods that this person came into the café. he had fluffy looking brown hair, a squirrel-like face, and kind brown eyes that i felt like i could fall intoxicated with. i immediately perked up.
"w-welcome in!" i mentally slapped myself for stuttering. the boy waved and smiled at me. he smiled! i wanted to keep it forever.
he seemed a bit nervous as well, walking over to where i was working. i turned around to one; hopefully calm my heart (CAN YOU HEAR MY HEARTEU BEATEU ⁉️), and two; get a book from a higher shelf. i couldn't reach it though, so i was struggling.
"do you...need help with that..?" i heard a voice come from behind me. i froze in my spot and turned to see a boy.
my brain went into overdrive and i mentally panicked. "i- uhm...yes please," i mumbled anxiously. i pointed to the book i was trying to reach. "it's that one," i said, letting him reach above me and grab the book with ease. he walked up behind me and leaned up over me, his chest slightly pressing against my back. he was warm and he felt...soft. i could tell he worked out rather often.
"this one, right?" he asked, the smile returning.
i nodded. "mhm! thank you...?" i had just realized that i didn't even know his name. "sorry, what was your name?"
"jisung. han jisung. yours?" his cheeks turned a little pink as he asked me my name with his little british accent.
"jaden attwood," i smiled at him. "but i go by luna with my friends." he nodded.
then i realized how close we were. my back was kind of pressed against the back of the bookshelf and he slightly towered above me. it felt like a drama, my book to my chest and looking up at this god-crafted boy- no, man that i hadn't ever seen before.
time felt like it had stopped for a moment. i stood there awkwardly and he just smiled.
"jaden! c'mon, you've got work!" i heard kate shout from the doorway. i looked at her and saw her smirk. i turned red and shot her a glare.
i looked back up at jisung and smiled apologetically. "sorry, i'm kinda working right now..."
he shook his head and took a step back, giving me a anxious thumbs-up. "you're alright, my bad for getting so close... luna." are you kidding me?! even his apologies are adorable! someone should thank his parents. he remembered my name too! i feel bad...usually i'd forget immediately.
i didn't forget though. how could i forget the name of a boy this lovely?
he turned to walk away and i took his wrist to stop him. "hey, do...do you want to hang out later? maybe, like, after my shift today?" i blurted, the words coming out of my mouth like a waterfall.
he turned red and faced me. he looked like he was nervous about his answer to my inquiry. but after a couple moments, he had an answer. "y-yeah...yes please," he hummed with the sweetest smile.
"i'll see you at...3 then?" i smiled at him, letting go of his wrist and putting my hand in my pocket.
jisung nodded. "i'll see you then, luna."
my name sounded so nice from him.
time skip ; 3:00 p.m.
ding! i bid farewell to my friends at work and left the shop. i was about to put in my headphones and head home but i heard a familiar voice calling my name.
"luna! luna~!" i looked around and couldn't see anyone. "over here, silly! hello~!" i smiled as i finally spotted jisung waving his arms around to gain my attention. and he certainly did.
the moment i spotted jisung, i ran to him with a wide grin. "hi jisung!" i smiled, stopping right in front of him with a slightly heavy breath.
he giggled at my breathing pattern. oh my gosh, his laugh is so cute!
"luna, why'd you run? you could've walked!" he chuckled, pushing my arm lightly.
i rolled my eyes and giggled. "well, i didn't want to waste time! hanging out with friends is always fun."
"i would think that you would just want to hang out at home after a long shift though, i always look forward to just going home every day!" he said, starting to walk in a random direction. i followed, obviously.
i shrugged and walked beside jisung. "well...yes, i obviously love being at home, but i like being with friends just as equally." i looked at him, put my hands in my pockets.
"hm...what about partners? have you had one?" he asked, the side of his fist hitting his palm as if he'd gotten the best idea.
i shook my head. "no, i haven't. have you?" i asked, turning a corner.
"nope. what do you think it's like?" jisung kicked a rock in front of him on the sidewalk. he seemed to do that a lot.
"dunno. i've only read about romance, much less participate in it." i huffed, my cheeks pink and my breath snow-white in the cold air. "what do you think it's like? being in love with someone?"
he hummed, deep in thought. "magical."
"what?"
"magical. like floating. like..." he paused. "being on a plane and it goes above the clouds. and then just staying there." jisung smiled and looked at me. "i think it would feel like that."
"oh."
"yeah."
"i think it would feel like home. kind of the opposite of what you'd think. grounded. steady." i said, swiping my tongue over my lips. "but not like an end table. i mean like...the kind of steady where someone says 'it's gonna be okay,' the moment where someone gives you that hope of being alright in the end." i looked to my side to see that jisung wasn't next to me. i looked around and saw him a couple steps behind me, staring at something.
"jisung?" i stood next to him, trying to see whatever he was trying to see. "what are you doing?"
"look." he pointed down the street.
"there's nothing there." i said, raising a brow. do i have a crush on a weirdo?
"no, there is. look closely." he raised my chin up slightly, and i saw it.
it was a giant. fucking. spider.
i screamed and jumped back. "jisung! what the fuck!" i shuddered.
he cackled. "oh my god! you should've seen that! your reaction was hilarious," he said catching up to me.
i was almost in tears -- i hated spiders. "oh, i h-haate you..." i whispered. he wrapped his arms around me and swayed a little.
"awh, i'm sorry." he said, still giggling. boys did that? they giggled? he put his hands on my upper arms, making small circles. "what can i do to make it up to you, hm?"
"you can walk me to a bookstore, that's what." i said, flicking his nose.
he smiled widely. oh, him and his silly heart-shaped smile. "then walking you to a bookstore it is." he grabbed my hand. "shall we?"
i blushed profusely and nodded. "..we shall."
we got the bookstore just fine, no spiders in tow.
