· · ─────── ·○□△ · ─────── · ·As consciousness slowly returned, a dull throbbing pulsed through my head, making it difficult to focus. My vision was blurry, but I could make out the harsh white of my surroundings. With each breath I took, a sharp pain stabbed at my side.
The sterile smell of disinfectant assaulted my nostrils, making me feel even more disoriented. The only sound that could be heard was a faint beeping. My heart raced as I tried to make sense of where I was and how I'd gotten there.
I was lying in a medical room, bright fluorescent lights glaring down at me. The walls were bare, save for a few pieces of generic-looking medical equipment. There was a single door on one side of the room, shut tightly. There were no windows, no pictures on the walls - nothing to give any indication of where I might be or who had brought me here.
Tentatively, I tried to move, but my side screamed in protest. Memories flooded back - the gunshot, the pain. I reached down to touch my side, feeling the stiff bandages wrapped around my waist. Somehow, I managed to prop myself up enough to pull my shirt up and examine the bandages. Dots of blood seeped through the thick white fabric, staining it a deep crimson. Panicked thoughts raced through my mind: Where am I? How did I get here? How am I alive?
I couldn't help but wonder what had happened to Edward in the chaos that had ensued. The memory of his topaz eyes flashed through my mind, but it seemed so distant now. My thoughts raced, searching for answers, but I couldn't make sense of any of it.
"Hello?" I called out, my voice shaky and hoarse. "Is anyone there?"
And then, Edward stepped into the room.
My heart leaped at the sight of Edward. His expression was unreadable, and his demeanor was cool and collected as if he had expected to find me here.
His appearance had changed drastically since the last time I had seen him. He was wearing a crisp suit and tie, his hair neatly styled. He looked almost like a different person - gone were any traces of fear or worry that had been etched on his face before.
"Edward..." I breathed, my voice trembling as a torrent of emotions threatened to overwhelm me.
"Bella," he replied softly, his voice strained as if it pained him to speak. He hesitated for a moment before taking a step closer, his eyes never leaving mine. "I didn't think you'd be awake yet."
He seemed relaxed, even carefree as if we were back in Forks and our troubles were nothing more than childish squabbles. On one hand, he carried a plate of food - steak and potatoes, not hospital food - which he placed on the table beside me.
"Here, you must be hungry," he said, smiling at me.
"How did you survive?" I asked, struggling to keep my voice steady. I waited for him to explain what had happened since we were separated.
He gazed around the empty hospital room as if searching for the right words to explain their situation. He told me about this game played in South Korea, and about how wealthy patrons could bet on the lives of the players. The players were pawns, mere entertainment for the ones who placed their bets on each move and decision. How his family became patrons of theirs, as it was a good way for them to obtain a steady supply of human blood. The Cullens kept the secret that they were vampires closely guarded, Bella had been the exception. But in the end, they were able to reach a compromise, both understanding the need for a high level of secrecy.
