You begin speed walking home. You wonder what's behind the message. Your mom messaged you and told you to be home. That can only mean that she's home too. And if your mom's home, your dad will probably be too. He sees her as seldom as you do. Is this really happening? A long-awaited family dinner?
These thoughts are pushed out to make room for other problems: could you really become a hero with your quirk? You hadn't realized this before but they're accepting people based on their hero-potential, so you really need to start training.
Physical training is simple enough, you just worry that you'll go easy on yourself. But training your quirk is the biggest obstacle.
You have the same quirk as your mom but she uses it to be in high gear all day and to heat water in a mug for tea, rendering the kettle a certified waste of money and time. But as far as you know, your quirk is already more versatile than hers. You can do all the above and direct your body heat into your hands, other body parts as well if you'd practice. But what about mobility, long-range attacks, and defense? You don't even know whether your quirk is suited for fighting. And then there's also rescue and evacuation. What can you do?
Feeling defeated, you stop. If only you could find a teacher or a mentor it would make everything much easier. Without noticing, you're staring at the ground and clenching your fists.
You hear tires screech and expect to hear a crash, but it doesn't come. It was just a screech because the Number Two hero Endeavor stopped the two cars from colliding.
You look at the scene unfolding in front of you: people talking, Endeavour burning (like usual), the police rushing over, people getting out of the car, someone asking "Are you injured?" But all you can truly focus on is the Flame Hero.
Since it seemed like he finished talking with the police and his sidekicks also made it, you force your legs to move and talk to the pro.
"Endeavor! I'd like to talk to you, if possible. I'd really like to hear your opinion about a quirk."
He acknowledges you with his usual stern glare, not saying anything. You continue walking towards him so that he can't ignore you. You manage to get pretty close when one of his sidekicks steps between
"Now, there, there. There's no need to"--
You notice him trying to grab your left arm and you concentrate on making that part of your body hot.
He does grab your arm but only for a second.
"That's HOT!" he yells as he lets go. "You have a crazy fever or something?"
You suspect that it's not actually hot enough to burn him but hot enough to surprise him.
"A heat quirk?" Endeavour asks, seeming sure that you are not an undercover villain. Well, if you were, he could blast you away in an instant. There's no risk in letting you get close.
"Yes. I've hit a wall with my powers. I can already do more than my mom but it's not enough to apply for U.A High."
His eyes widen for a split second. "Your mom. Is she Dr. Tsukauchi by any chance?"
"Yes," you quickly admit, happy that the conversation is going on. "How did you know?"
"You look just like her. A lot of people have been saved by her diligence. And from what she's told me, she's able to save so many people thanks to her quirk. Fine, I'll hear you out then."
"Endeavour, are you sure?" the sidekick asks.
"I didn't say I'll stop working," he replies to the sidekick. Then he turns to you. "I'm assuming you won't be able to keep up with me, Tsukauchi?"
"No. That's a part of the problem. I'm not fast at all, only my reflexes are."
Having said that, you quickly turn to see Endeavour flying off somewhere. He must have noticed something. You try to track him with your eyes and follow him. You can't let him forget about you now that you actually got to talk to him.
You arrive at the crime scene panting. Endeavour has already captured the villains and is handing them over to the police. Wow, he's amazing.
You keep an eye on the Number Two, waiting for him to return to the conversation.
"So you were saying?"
This time he doesn't walk anywhere but stands and waits for you to talk.
"Depending on the, huff, weather and season, huff, I can control the heat in my body, huff, and also concentrate it in specific parts. But, huff, that's about it. I can't defend nor do I have a long-range attack. I'm not fast or physically strong either. I'd reach a limit even if I trained."
"Hmm," he replies, considering what I said. Then he snaps out of it and flies off again.
You groan and start running after him again.
This time the situation seems more dire. Endeavour has not captured the villain yet and the traffic below is affected. You pull closer to a surrounding building, hoping that you won't become a liability. You stand there spellbound by the tactics and movements of a pro hero. If only I could be half as good...
Endeavour, after a minor in-air chase, captures the villain without much hassle. This time the press make it in time as well and start pestering him immediately after he hands over the villain.
Ignoring the press, he walks over to you, grabs you, and flies up on a rooftop a few blocks away. You're hoping that it was because you could talk there relatively uninterrupted, but seeing how he is keeping his eye on the surroundings, he came here for just that.
"So you're saying that your quirk is limited to close range attacks," he picks up the conversation again.
"Yes."
"I have only two things to say. First is that your heat quirk could probably be developed to produce flames as well, if you can get the temperature high enough. Remember that the smaller the area the hotter you can get your body."
Your phone beeps but you ignore it. You remember your dinner. But you can't worry about that – you need to absorb everything he's saying.
"The second is that you need to constantly use your quirk. You said that you can do more than your mom, but you were still panting after running. The whole reason why she can work consistently is because she's using the warmth around her to replenish her energy, right? If you did that, you'd be able to keep running forever."
"But that would only work when it's sunny or warm, sir."
"What about the heat you produce by moving?"
You consider the possibility. It could work in theory, but you're not sure.
"You can manipulate the heat in your body, but what about extracorporeal heat?"
He is just saying what comes to mind, you realize that, but he is essentially brainstorming for you. You probably can't achieve most of what he's saying, but he's giving you ideas to work with. His relentless drive to be better is destroying any walls you've put up.
"I'll do my best," you promise. "Thank you so much for your time!"
"When you figure it out and make it, Tsukauchi, come work for me."
"I promise I will!"
