Thomas:
It was completely dark out when Thomas and Newt got back to the Estate. It had also started raining. Once they got home, they told Lance what had happened. Thomas and Newt went to bed soon afterwards.
It was midnight. Rain was pouring and it was thundering. Occasionally, there was lightning. Newt was asleep, but Thomas stayed awake. He was thinking about why Mr. L would want to kill Newt. Thomas didn't know who he was, but he knew that Mr. L killed people for a reason. The reason was that they were a threat to other people or they were dangerous. He also killed rapists and murderers. Normally, Thomas could tell who Mr. L had killed because their cause of death wouldn't be identified. No one could figure out how the person was murdered.
Mr. L killed people for a reason. Either it wasn't Mr. L who was trying to kill Newt, or Newt had done something really bad...but what would that be? Thomas knew that Newt was hiding something, but didn't know what it was.
Thomas was thinking about this when Newt woke up with a gasp, and instantly sat up in his bed. Sweat glistened on his forehead. There was a strike of lightning. Thomas saw that Newt was wearing a necklace, but was unable to make out what it was in the dark. Newt touched the necklace.
"Are you okay?" Thomas asked.
Newt looked at Thomas and tucked the necklace into his night shirt. It shimmered as he did so.
"Yeah," Newt said. "It was just a dream. Did I wake you?"
"No," Thomas said. "I was already awake."
Thomas walked over to Newt's bed.
"What was the dream about?" Thomas asked.
"It was one of the attempts someone made on my life," Newt said. "In the dream they succeeded."
There were some loose strands of hair in Newt's face and Thomas reached over and moved them out of the way. After Thomas moved them out of the way, Newt looked at Thomas. The boys looked into each others eyes. Thomas was afraid that he would make it awkward, so he cleared his throat and looked away.
"Would you mind if we go down stairs?" Newt asked. "I'd like to get a glass of water."
"No, I don't mind," Thomas said.
Thomas and Newt headed downstairs. To get to most of the rooms in the Estate, Thomas and Newt would pass Lance's office. Normally, one of the doors was slightly open, but this time it was closed. Thomas heard Lance talking and his voice was raised. Thomas quietly opened the door a crack, opening it as quietly as he could, so Lance wouldn't notice. Lance was on the phone.
"Can't you fucking get anything done?" Lance yelled as he was on the phone. "I will give you a month. You better get it done."
Lance slammed the phone down on it's cradle. He reached for a bottle of something and poured it into a glass. Thomas thought, What was that about? Then Thomas closed the door. Newt was ahead of Thomas and he caught up with him.
In the kitchen, Newt got out a glass and filled it with water.
"Do you want anything while we're here?" Newt asked.
"No, I'm good," Thomas said. "Thanks."
There was a phone in the kitchen and it started ringing.
"Could you answer that?" Newt asked.
"Sure," Thomas said.
Thomas walked up to the phone and picked it up.
"I need to speak to Thomas," a raspy voice said. It was Thomas's father.
"It's me, dad," Thomas said.
"Is anyone listening?" Mr. Edison asked.
Thomas looked at Newt.
"Newt's here and I can't leave him," Thomas said.
"Then be as vague as possible when you answer," Mr. Edison said. Thomas looked away from Newt. "I think you should keep an eye on Lance."
"Why?" Thomas asked.
"I have reason to believe he may be involved in the murder attempts," Mr. Edison said.
This made Thomas think back to what Lance said in his office. It confused Thomas. Lance seemed to love Newt. Was it all an act?
"What makes you think that?" Thomas asked.
"Newt's mother came from a rich family," Mr. Edison said. "After she died, all the money went to Newt. Not Lance."
"You think that's why?" Thomas asked.
Thomas's father never answered. He hung up instead. Thomas put the phone down.
"What was that about?" Newt asked.
Thomas looked at Newt. What could he say? That Newt's father was possibly the person trying to kill Newt? No. He should wait until his father was sure that it was Lance.
"It was just my father asking how I was," Thomas said.
It was a lie. Thomas's father would never ask how Thomas was. Mr. Edison didn't have a care in the world about Thomas, and there was no love lost between them.
The boys headed back upstairs to Newt's room. Newt walked back to his bed and climbed in. He looked uneasy. Thomas walked over to the bed and sat down on it.
"You okay?" Thomas asked.
"Yeah," Newt said. "I'm just afraid that I'll have another one of those dreams."
Before Thomas could think, he put his hand on Newt's shoulder.
"Newt," Thomas said. "I will make sure none of those dreams come true. I will protect you."
Newt smiled at Thomas.
"Thanks, Tommy," Newt said.
Newt leaned forward and kissed Thomas's cheek. The kiss made Thomas's heart flutter. After they said goodnight, Thomas walked back to the couch and laid down. Only, he didn't sleep. He just kept thinking about the kiss on his cheek.I hope you are enjoying the story! Please vote and comment!
