"So, you're just gonna keep going? You're not going to let that go?" Jesse asked Demi as they entered their apartment. Demi was the first to enter and she tried to slam the door in Jesse's face but he caught it before she could.
"Yeah, I'm gonna keep going." Demi said as she threw her backpack and coat down. She made her way to the bathroom so she could take her hair out of its ponytail. It had been giving her the biggest headache all day and this argument was not making it better.
To Demi, the argument was stupid. She figured if they just stopped talking about it, they would have no trouble but Jesse continued to push it. It started after Demi's lecture. She met Jesse in the library so she could study for her final exam which was at the end of the week. It was the last week of school before winter break and they still hadn't made plans about what they were going to do for the holidays. Jesse suggested that they go down to Texas and spend the holidays with Demi's family. He said it was only fair because they had been dating for almost a year but Jesse had never met any of Demi's family.
Demi immediately shot the idea down and typically, that would be where the conversation ends, but Jesse wasn't letting her go that quickly. He wanted answers.
"I didn't even mean to really fucking do, or say anything." Jesse said as he leaned against the door frame of the bathroom, watching Demi take out her contacts and put on her glasses. She pushed past Jesse and strutted into their living room.
"You're going to ignore me? This what we're doing now?" Jesse questioned.
"As long as you want to keep talking about this, yeah, this is what we're doing." Demi finally responded. She couldn't bring herself to look at Jesse so instead she kept herself occupied by doing random things around their apartment.
"I don't even understand why you're so upset. All I did was suggest that we spend some time in Texas with your family for the holidays."
"And I said no! Why can't you just leave it at that?" Demi argued.
"Why not?! Demi you've met my entire family yet I've never even heard of anyone from your family. What is so wrong with me wanting to meet my girlfriend's family?"
Truthfully, there was nothing wrong with it. Demi loved how badly Jesse wanted to meet her family but that could never happen because she couldn't let Jesse see the type of people that raised her.
Jesse had a picture-perfect life. He had loving and caring parents and his brothers who were practically his best friends. It was everything Demi had ever wanted, which was why she loved spending time with his family.
Demi's family was the exact opposite. She had a mother who grew up hating her and an older sister who did her best to ignore her at all costs. She couldn't risk letting her family drive Jesse away so she kept him as far away as possible.
"Are you ashamed of me or something? Why are you hiding this relationship?"
"I'm not fucking hiding it!" Demi fired back. "There's a lot about me that you don't know Jesse. Including my family and the way I was raised. I'd like to keep it that way, okay?"
"That's how you want this relationship to be? You wanna keep secrets from each other? I thought we promised to tell each other everything." Jesse recalled.
"We did but it's easier said than done, Jesse." Demi admitted. What Jesse didn't understand was that Demi needed time to open up on her own, not to be pushed by him.
"Well, I can't keep going back and forth with you, Demi. So whenever you want to be an adult and talk to me, I'll be waiting."
That was their first big argument. They didn't talk for three days and by the end of it, Demi was a wreck. She spent each night crying herself to sleep in their bed because all she wanted was her boyfriend. Jesse slept on their cheap couch which gave him back pain but he meant what he said. He was going to give Demi space until she was ready to talk. It wasn't until the last day that Demi was ready to talk. She told him everything and a weight off of her chest was lifted.
