Other than Dallas, Jesse had never met anyone from Demi's family. He didn't know how he would react if he ever had the chance to meet Dianna. He couldn't promise anyone that he would be nice because after everything Demi told him, he wanted to tell Dianna off for being such a horrible mother.
He wasn't planning on coming with Demi. They were in a new state and he had nobody to watch Luna. But when Dallas called Demi saying that Dianna had been rushed to the hospital that morning, he had no choice.
Now they sat in the waiting room, nervously waiting for the news on Dianna. Demi was still unsure of what had happened. Dallas was crying too much to explain and Madison was giving Demi the cold shoulder.
Jesse could feel the tension as he sat with Demi and her family. Dallas and Madison sat on the row opposite side of them. Madison would give Demi death stares every now and then but Demi didn't pay her any attention. She seemed to be stuck in her thoughts.
Demi's leg did not stop shaking and every two minutes or so, Demi would check the time. With every minute that passed she grew anxious. Despite her history with Dianna, she was still her mother and she didn't want anything bad to happen to her.
After what felt like a lifetime, a doctor approached them. "Excuse me, you all came with Mrs. De La Garza, correct?" The doctor asked.
Dallas was the first to stand up and approach the doctor. "Yes, is she okay? Please tell me my mother is okay."
Dallas's voice was weak and scared. It shocked Demi to see her sister in such a fragile state. She had always been the tough older sister who never let anything get her down. Dallas letting her guard down showed how much she cared for Dianna.
"Your mother is stable." The doctor said. Demi let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "We are keeping her here until we feel she is strong enough to be on her own again."
"Is that really necessary? All she did was faint." Madison asked.
"Mrs. De La Garza fainted because she had extreme shortness of breath and her oxygen levels were dropping significantly. Now I suggest you sit down as I have some devastating news to break." The doctor suggested.
Demi watched as Dallas took her seat and grabbed Madison's hand, bracing herself for what the doctor was going to say. Luna saw Demi's wandering eyes and grabbed her hand that was resting on the armrest. She squeezed it while giving Demi a small smile. Luna's gesture was heartwarming, but nothing could prepare her for what the doctor was going to say.
"I'm afraid your mother has been misdiagnosed. She is not dealing with heart issues, it's lung cancer."
Everything went silent. Demi could see Dallas immediately standing up to go off on the doctor for misdiagnosing Dianna and she watched as tears escaped Madison's eyes and she dug her face into her hands while she cried. The only thing she could hear was a sudden ringing in her ears. Her hands began to shake and her vision started to fade.
Demi wasn't broken out of her trance until a hand tapped on her shoulder. When Demi finally realized what was going on, everyone was staring at her. Including the doctor.
"Mrs. De La Garza is stable and accepting visitors but she requests to see Demetria first."
Demi could feel her heart beating out of her chest. She wasn't prepared to see Dianna, especially not after what she just found out. Demi took a deep breath and stood up from her seat in the waiting room. She could feel her hands shaking from the nerves.
The doctor gestured for Demi to follow her. Demi began walking but her legs felt like they were going to give out on her at any second. As she passed Jesse she felt a sudden hand on her shoulder.
