Though she didn't know what these feelings were, she could figure out where they came from. Throughout the years, Red had always stuck by her side, defending her with what little strength he thought he had, joining her on some of her most passionate projects, sharing his loves with her and happily partaking in some of her own.
And one day, the fact had hit Green like a truck: this was the boy that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. She wanted to spend the rest of her life waking up every morning next to someone who would happily die for her, whether she asked him to or not—and someone for whom she'd do the same. She realized that there really weren't many people like him in the world, and she realized that she had to treasure him while he was still here.
Which is why, at this moment, she was more terrified than ever that she'd be the reason he left her life forever.
After getting some help from a few friends, she managed to invite the boy to the rooftop after school, where she had planned to finally confess all of her feelings for him and face the music head-on. She'd rushed through the initial verbal invitation to the rooftop, knowing that if she had let herself think about it, she'd instantly chicken out. Now, as she was waiting tensely for him to arrive, she was already starting to second guess herself.
But she didn't have much time to do so. She heard a high-pitched creak from the direction of the stairwell, and when she turned to face it, she found the boy that she had been thinking about all day smiling at her as he walked through the door and toward her. "Hey, Green!" he greeted with a wave. "You, uh...wanted to tell me something?"
"Uh, y-yeah," she replied shakily. The two of them walked toward each other and met the other halfway, in the middle of the rooftop. Unfortunately for Green, she and Red were the same height, meaning that she naturally held eye contact with him anytime she looked at him, even against her will. Nevertheless, she gulped nervously and steeled up her nerves one last time.
"Red, I...I know this might be weird to hear," she started, her limbs already starting to tremble, "but I think now is the best time to tell you this. I...I love you, Red."
Red's eyebrows shot up in surprise as an embarrassed blush instantly appeared on both of their faces. "I really do," Green continued, despite her fear. "I think I...I think I've loved you for years now. I...you just...you make me feel so happy, and...I feel safe when I'm with you. You're always there for me when no one else is. I feel like if the world was ending, I could fall into your arms and everything would be all right. You make me feel things that I've never felt before, and...I-I've never felt happier than when I'm with you. I...I really love you, Red, and...I just think you should know. So, um...h-how do you, uh...f-feel about me?"
She shut her eyes and braced herself for his reply. Though she waited several seconds, none ever came. Finally, she opened her eyes and found herself gazing into his deep, thoughtful eyes. He wore a blank expression, one that she couldn't decipher. She gulped again and started to sweat, wondering if she had blown her greatest friendship to bits.
Eventually, however, she noticed Red's face move slightly. She watched him intently; she could see the gears turning in his own brain. Finally, Red took a deep breath, looked Green in the eyes, and started to answer, causing Green to flinch instinctively at what she'd hear next.
And she had ended the story there, for Fan to finish.
At the time, it had seemed like a brilliant, genius idea: let Fan write his own response down and give it to Test Tube because both of them knew that they were too much of a nervous wreck to confess out loud. Now, it seemed like it would be her death knell—she certainly felt like she wanted to die of embarrassment.
