My morning starts differently that usual. I have always woken up at the same time each day, without need from an alarm clock. My routine starts, and I have all my needs taken care of before I wake Angela and get her started for the day. But today seemed to be the opposite.
My eyelids open to Angela's bright shining face staring at me. Her face mere centimeters away from mine. I startle awake and sit up quickly. Angela laughs, calling me a sleepy head. Looking around, I try to gain any semblance of what is going on. What time is it? Could I have seriously been so tired that I slept in?
I rub at my temples, dull with ache from a lack of sleep. Yet happiness bubbles up inside of me and a grin quickly starts to form on my face.
"Sorry I was so tired! Good morning Angela," I greet the young witch in front of me. She appears to already be up and ready for the day.
"Mifune said I should let you sleep, but I got bored. Let's play!" Angela throws her hands up in the air. I laugh and stand up, stretching my arms out.
"Go play outside for a bit then I will join you there. I need to get dressed first." I wander over to my closet. While my pyjamas are more comfortable, it would be indecent of me to walk around in them all day. Especially with Mifune around. Even the thought of him seeing me in my pyjamas makes me blush. Embarrassing for the both of us. My hands search through the fabrics before my eye catches on a colourful and flowy sundress. When in such a good mood, a cute outfit is the perfect match.
As I walk down the hall after properly caring for myself, I notice a slight skip in my step. It has been a while since I have done anything like that. I giggle to myself, the secret of what is making me this happy is exciting.
The sun is hidden today, but that does not do anything to squander what a lovely day I think it is. As I set outside and look up at the sky, all I can see is grey clouds as far as the eye can see. In the distance, I notice what could be some rain approaching. A cold chilling breeze confirms my thoughts. I shiver slightly for a moment before brushing it off and continuing outside where Angela plays. She throws a rock at a stick, making it snap. Her hands throw themselves up in the air as she cheers. A strange game, but as long as she is happy.
I watch her for a moment, and feel a presence join beside me.
"How are you feeling?" Mifune asks. I look up at him, to see he is already peering down at me.
"I'm good, how are you today?" I cannot contain my smile. I need to hide what I got up to last night, but it is so hard when all I feel is overwhelming happiness inside of me.
"Good. You slept in pretty late this morning. Thought you might be feeling sick or something."
"Oh no, just couldn't fall asleep is all. I apologize, guessing you were the one to take care of Angela?"
"It's not a problem. You needed the rest it seems. Haven't heard you hum before."
A blush streaks across my face. Ah, now that he mentioned it I have had a song stuck in my head all morning. It was one my mom and dad always sang to me as a child. A sweet lullaby of sorts. It was something I always connected to the feeling of love and comfort. The words are long forgotten but I still know the melody. I must have started humming it without thinking.
I stutter, not sure what to even say to that. Not even wanting to think of why I felt the unconscious need to hum it, I just need to figure out how to respond.
"Oh, I didn't know I was doing that, sorry." Was all I could manage to think of. Mentally, I slap myself for such a lame response.
It is really sweet – for lack of a better word – for Mifune to notice something small like that. While me sleeping in is not normal on days where I plan to teach and look after Angela, the humming thing is not something I myself noticed. Though I tend to not do it around anyone else. I did not expect that from him.
