I had a nightmare. The medicine induced coma I had been put in was supposed to erase all pain so that I could sleep properly, but the image of the man holding my mothers decapitated head was seemingly stubborn and refused to leave my conscious memory though I tried to shove it away. That memory alone was all it took for excruciating mental pain to enter my head, and once it was in, I couldn't lock it back out.
I wake up screaming, the hospital gown they dressed me in while I was unconscious soaked with sweat. Looking around frantically, I see a glass of water on the bedside table and chug it. Sighing as the cold liquid satisfies the burning of my cracked and parched mouth, I take deep, slightly shaky breaths that eventually lead to my heart rate slowing down, the constant beeping of the monitor going back to normal.
A nurse bustles in, chatting happily as she checks my pulse. All of a sudden, she stops talking and turned around to look at me. "You've got someone who want's to see you." she says nervously, I fake a smile and she leaves the room. Someone tentatively knocks on the door and I say a quiet "Come in". I startle as Hawks steps into the room, playing anxiously with a lock of his yellow hair.
"H-Hawks?!" I exclaim, halfway between laughing at his expression and crying at the memory of what took place in my home. I settle with a blank look. "What happened?" I ask, trying to keep the shaking out of my voice. "Well," Hawks hesitates, I gesticulate towards the chair beside the bedside table, and he drags it over so that he could sit and support his head while leaning against the covers.
"I was in the middle of patrol when my feathers sensed a scream. I raced-I mean-I flew as fast as I could and arrived just in time to see the police pull up in front of your house. I helped them break the door down and detected two people breathing. I ran upstairs and managed to catch you just as you passed out from blood loss."
He takes a deep breath. It hurts me to hear how much trouble he went through to help me, so I reach out and playfully ruffled up his already messy hair. He looks up at me from where he was staring at the bed, and smiles.
