Out of all three of my jobs, working at the La Push store had to be my favourite. I didn't really expect that, when I applied for the position, but really, it's because Reed is working with me too. And Mrs. Call was kind enough to give us most of our shifts together.

'Alright, I've cleaned up. I'll see you tomorrow.'

Micah was the best person to swap shifts with, because he would always leave the store immaculate. It made beginning the six hours of work a lot easier. Reed swept a hand across the counter—we know that it looked amazing, but she did it every day anyway.

'What was Jared like?' Reed asked in the silence of the store. Mrs. Call went to pick up her kid and his friends, and no customers had entered yet, so it was just us. I should have expected the question; Reed was a firm believer of the cult assumptions.

'Not as bad as I thought,' I admitted, picking at the cotton on my sweater. 'He's actually really nice. Though he did have to leave early.'

Reed's eyebrows shot up, 'What, he ditched you?' With one hand, she slapped mine away before I unthreaded my sweater completely.

I shrugged. 'Kind of—it was weird. Paul Lahote, you know that guy who got into the fight with Quil, interrupted us. He said something about "Sam's call" and then he went really still, like this.' I imitated the stance Paul took, with his feet apart and his hands in fists at his side. I tried to mirror his intense stare, but it was difficult when Reed started giggling.

'Sounds like he was high,' she laughed. 'I think I know who you're talking about. He's the newest one in Sam Uley's gang right? The "hall monitors on steroids?"'

I nodded.

'Oo, he's hot. Maybe he's into you.'

'Reed!'

The thing about Reed Whitlock is that she has never told a lie in her life. If she thinks it, she'll say it. I suppose, if we were wild party people, it would keep us in check, but really, we'd much rather stay inside and watch silly rom-coms than go to a party. Actually, I take that back. Lilly, Reed and I would much rather stay inside. Natasha would love to go to a party.

'I'm kidding!' Reed exclaimed. Then she frowned. 'No, I'm not. I reckon he might have just realised what a beautiful person you are.'

I blushed. Reed was funny like that sometimes. She thought I was pretty, when she was one of the most gorgeous people I had met. Reed had been born in California, but her mother had only been sixteen. Estella Whitlock had never told us the whole story, but I knew just from observing that she had moved to La Push as soon as she could. However, the rez has a thing about non-Native people moving onto our land, so they lived right on the border, and Reed went to the Forks high school. Reed's hair was like spun gold, only just lighter than the freckles on her nose. Unlike most of us, her eyes were blue and while she hated them, I loved them, because it meant that she's great at intimidation.
