Chapter 18: Companion

Start from the beginning

You furrow your brows. "Excuse me?"

He grabs the sports bag from the ground, takes your phone from your hand and shoves it into one of the outer pockets before putting it around his shoulder and turning you around.

"I recommend keeping your mouth shut while in the air. And also maybe your eyes as well, we'll be flying pretty fast," he says before sliding his hands around you, having a firm-ish grip on your torso. Your backpack is squished between you and him. He starts flapping his wings and your feet leave the ground, gravity pulling you back but failing.

"In case of an emergency landing," he continues, "you'll probably be fine."

You shut your mouth and eyes as you begin to pick up speed. Moving through the sky quickly, cold air cuts your cheeks, but it's nowhere near as cold as Shoto's ice. You do your best to relax your face and enjoy the thrill of flying, but you can't help but wonder if Hawks is taking you to the right place.

The moment you feel that you start slowing down, you force your eyes open. You're flying above an urban area, but one that doesn't have many high buildings. You look around and see nothing remarkable, not that you would be able to go.

Hawks descends and puts you down in front of a decrepit old house.

"Is this the place?" you ask him while he is handing you your sports bag.

"On the spot," he says.

You check the address and he is right. "Well, thank you very much, Number Three," you say with a bow. He doesn't reply so you take a deep breath and start walking up the stairs.

You turn around and he is still there, standing with his hands in his pockets and a smirk on his face. You step back down.

"Um, but why did you help me?"

"You looked desperate."

"Hey!"

"...so I figured this was important," he seemed to add at the last second. "So, what will you be doing here?" he asks, looking at the old building.

"I was sent here to train."

"Train? But you could easily become a sidekick right here and now."

"Well, I don't want to. It's not about what people think or my current skills. I simply can't because I haven't completed the proper training. It wouldn't be right," you explain.

"You really are something else. I wish I could scout you for my own agency, but since you can't fly, I don't think it would be a good fit. Well, I'll cheer you on at the very least."

"Thanks."

The mutual silence and Hawks's hand gesturing to you to go ahead indicates that the conversation is over. Although he lingers, you climb the few stairs and knock on the door. You look behind you and see that Hawks is still there, showing no sign of leaving. Oh no, this might be a problem.

The door opens revealing no one, until you look down. A short old man in a yellow costume and a black eye mask stands at the door. "Ah, Tsukauchi, I've been expecting you, although not at this time."

You decide to act like a competent adult and bluff a little bit. "Well, I missed the train but thankfully Hawks was there to bring me here." You gesture to Hawks. "Gran Torino, this is Hawks; Hawks, this is Gran Torino, but you pro heroes probably all know each other."

They greet each other and you're super happy that you hadn't forgotten the name of your new teacher. They in fact hadn't met before, but it's not like you had actually believed what you had said.
