Before you knew it, the two of you were walking down the street and on the way to his pineapple. You walked in comfortable silence, hand in hand.
Looking up, you saw that the ocean sky was a mix of pink and orange shades, which casted down a beautiful color palette on your surroundings as a result of the sunset. You always liked the pretty painted backgrounds of the show, but now that you were living in it, it was so much more stunning up close.
"Did you see me serving people?" Spongebob eventually asked.
You giggled. "I did."
"Did I look coooool?" He smiled.
You smirked. "Very cool."
Spongebob giggled. "So... Whadda you wanna do at my house?"
"We can watch some Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy... maybe..." You swung your arm back and forth. Spongebob followed suit, swinging his arm in sync, being connected with yours.
"Alright!" Spongebob pumped his fist excitedly.
The two of you eventually arrived at his home. Spongebob promptly opened his front door.
"After you, my friend," he extended his arm to allow you inside first.
"Ah, thank you, kind sir," you teased as you walked inside.
Spongebob's house appeared exactly how it looked in the cartoon. His quirky decor stood out--wacky wallpaper, fish-themed wallmounts, a shellphone, a-
"Meow!"
Huh? Who said that? You looked down to see the source of this sound. A colorful snail rubbed its shell on your leg. It was Gary!
"Awww hi, gare-bear!" Spongebob cooed to his snail, whom he bent down to pet. "Gary, this is my new friend, (Y/N)! You be nice to our guest, okay?"
Spongebob smiled up at you. "This is my snail Gary. He's real sweet, see?"
You simpered. "Snails on the surface are much smaller... your snail is very pretty." You lowered your hand to pet the kitten-like gastropod. Gary purred.
"He likes you!" Spongebob beamed. Gary slithered into Spongebob's arms, and he stood up straight. "Let's go sit!"
You followed Spongebob to the couch, where the two of you sat next to each other.
"I've got every episode of Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy on VHS tapes, but the first one is already loaded into the TV!" He said while petting Gary on his lap. "We can watch the first few episodes together!"
"Okay!" You propped your legs up on the couch.
And so, the two of you watched Spongebob's entire first VHS of Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy.
Spongebob would occasionally recite the dialogue from certain scenes, word for word, bar for bar, which you giggled at.
"How many times have you seen these episodes?" You asked.
"Oh, not too many, probably like, 400 times each, or something," Spongebob replied casually.
"Pfft. Fair enough." You responded.
His passion for Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy was... dare you say... adorable. You found it incredibly endearing about how excited he'd get to talk about each episode, and while you didn't entirely understand what was going on half the time, just hearing him gush about his interest was enough to make you smile. For each episode, he'd give an explanation to why he thought it was the best one, but was shortly followed up by a "No wait, nevermind! THIS is the best one!" to each and every episode after that.
Spongebob grabbed the remote and played the next episode. As he did this, he shifted his position on the couch, scooting closer to you, to the point where your legs were touching. Your heart flared up. He was close. So, so close...
He then put his arm around you. Oh shit. You might as well have melted right there on that couch into a puddle. Your face grew hot. He rubbed your shoulder and leaned closer towards you, seemingly revelling in your closeness, and if not that, your presence entirely.
"I-Is this okay?" Spongebob asked softly. You nodded very quickly. He smiled and tightened his arm's grip around you, sighing. Your heart nearly beat out of your chest.
Around two hours had passed now, and your eyes were on the verge of closing on their own. You were all Mermaid-Boy-and-Barnacle-Manned-out, and your head was swirling with random superhero trivia and iconic quotes.
Spongebob remained wide-eyed and glued to the screen... and to you.
You yawned, but not so loud that it would seem rude. Still, he noticed immediately. He snapped out of his trance and turned to you with a concerned look.
"Ah- Hey, if you're tired, we can go to bed," he offered.
You blinked slowly and muttered, "Y-Yeah, sorry..."
"Wha? Don't be sorry, (Y/N)! If you're sleepy, that's fine! We don't need to stay up!"
You groaned, rubbing one of your eyes. "Mmmh... okayyy..."
Spongebob watched as you attempted to get up from your seat, but idiotically fell back down.
"Can't... move..."
"Don't worry, (Y/N), I'll carry you to bed!" Spongebob announced.
"N-No... wait..." you pleaded. But it was too late. Spongebob had already scooped you up from the couch. For a guy who was constantly depicted to barely be able to lift up a stuffed animal, he was surprisingly able to carry you with ease. He couldn't have been working out, his arms resembled twigs. Cartoon physics, you guess. Still, you were incredibly flattered by this. He was so tiny, and you were just so much taller and bigger, you could have very well walked up those stairs by yourself. But Spongebob was such a gentleman, he'd rather bring you himself in his arms. If you were like, a garbage truck, he probably would have carried you then, too.
When the two of you reached his room at the top of the stairs, he quickly placed you in his bed. You were so exhausted, it was like you were nearly paralyzed by fatigue.
Spongebob pulled the blanket over you. "There you go, (Y/N). Comfy?"
"Yeah... Thanks..." you mumbled.
"Goodniiight," he sang, before placing a kiss on your forehead. You were glad that the lights were off, otherwise he might have seen you blushing. Spongebob walked around the other side of the bed and crawled in next to you. Your heart was beating rapidly, but it's not like you should have been surprised--you already knew he was an affectionate and sweet guy.
He immediately cuddled up to you as soon as he got comfortable. His arms wrapped gently around your waist and his face buried itself in your chest. You smiled and held him close. It was nice to finally cuddle someone instead of a pillow, like what you were used to, but he might as well have been a pillow due to his size.
Then, you started thinking. Does he just... do this with all his friends? You remembered how Spongebob would act towards Squidward in the show: overly affectionate and clingy. The thought made you frown. He was definitely just a clingy dude, nothing more. There was nothing between you two. The idea almost made you feel... less special. Here, you spent your entire day in the ocean with him, where the two of you grew close... both socially and literally. He brought you to his house, now you were sleeping in his bed, WITH him nonetheless. Was there really something special going on, or was he just naturally like this with everyone?
You looked down at him. Spongebob was fast asleep. He let out a dream-induced whine and squeezed his arms around you.
He made your heart race, that was for sure. Yet, with it already being hard enough for you to read social cues, you weren't sure if his interactions with you were flirty, or completely normal in his own way. You shut your eyes and fell asleep, unsure of how to feel.
