“What way?”
“Like they are madly in love with them, or badly wanna fuck them.”
“Maya please,” I laughed, glancing at the view of the city filled with lights. “How are you, girl?” I asked, trying to change the topic.
“Had a stressful day at work but when I got your text, all the stress was long gone. I was happy that you’re getting along with people and possibly will be falling in love soon.”
I chuckled, “Love? Not sure if that is an option right now, especially not after what Carl–”
“Oh please, I don’t want to hear you talk about that rat. Let yourself out there but be careful though. If love comes, and you think it’s genuine and makes you happy, then give it a chance. Jumping into a relationship shortly after leaving another might not always be a good thing, but sometimes it works. The person might be the right one, the only thing stopping you would be the timing. They might come at the wrong time, but who made these rules? What the fuck is the wrong and right time? As long as you’re single and like this person, you can maybe give it a try. And for you, it’s already been more than a month, not just a week or two. I’m sure that it’s not as bad as when you found out. And even though you might think about it from time to time, it wouldn’t hurt as bad as it did previously. Don’t let that son of a bitch stop you from finding love, okay?” She finished and I nodded.
Maya’s long speech almost brought me to tears, but I swore never to cry because of anything relating to Carl ever again. The urge to tell Maya about the original photo I wanted to send to her sparked in me, but I didn’t want to spoil the mood, and Carl wouldn’t find me no matter what. Why would I have to take him and his stupid texts seriously? I wouldn’t let him have that power over me, to discuss him with the people I love.
I heaved a deep sigh, a smile warming my face. “You should have been a better therapist than a nurse. Hell, you’re good at both and thank you for your words.”
“Girl you know…” was all I heard before a text popped at the top of my screen, and Maya’s words faded into thin air.
Nicklaus– Is the dinner invite still open?
I took my phone from the laptop where it was standing, and it took Maya yelling my name for my attention to be kicked back to her. I apologized and bid her good night, excusing myself and when she asked if Nicklaus was at my door, I chuckled but didn’t tell her it was him anyway.
After Maya’s face disappeared from my screen, I eagerly clicked on his text and typed ‘yes’ but then erased it. I needed to stand by my words, the words I told him at the elevator. I was never going to invite his cocky ass for anything.
My fingers ran across my phone keypad. Me– Not a chance, you are not invited to my home.
I tapped sent and almost immediately, Nicklaus flooded my screen with some corny sad emojis. I chuckled, but it was cut short by a ding of another text from him.
Nicklaus– Have you had dinner?
Me– Yeah, meaning no dinner invite for you today. I sent him another text and almost immediately he replied. Why was he so fast?
Nicklaus– Okay, come on and open the door or I will create a scene. At the end of the text was a wink emoji.
“What the fuck,” I muttered under my breath reading through his text.
Me: You wouldn’t dare.
Nicklaus– Try me, Love. Hear me scream your name if you don’t come out this minute.
