"Sybbie, my love, could you write something down for me?" Tommy asked, stopping in front of his wife at her desk, where she was surrounded by papers with all sorts of childish handwriting adorning them.
Blowing a piece of hair out of her eyes, she looked up at him wearily.
"Didn't know I'd been promoted from wife to secretary," she cracked a smile, moving her grading to the side and grabbing her notepad. "What's all this about, darling?"
"I'm writing a letter, and you're the only person I trust to read it before I send it."
"This should be good." Sybil mused, getting ready. "Alright, let's have it, then."
"Dear Mr. Churchill..."
Sybil gawked at her husband, waiting for the part where he told her that he was joking, and began again. But much to her chagrin, it never came.
"Has your pen run out of ink, love?" he mused, silently enjoying the look on her face.
"Have you gone mad?"
"Just write it down for me, please, Sybbie."
Shaking her head, she did as she as asked, nervous for what the rest of the letter could possibly contain if it was being addressed to Winston fucking Churchill.
"Dear Mr. Churchill, I've been approached by an agent of the Crown to carry out a task, as yet unspecified. His name is Major Campbell, and I believe he reports to you. Therefore, I decided write this letter to you to make sure that certain things are clearly understood."
"You should change that last part." Sybil intervened.
"What part, lovey?"
"The part where you said 'I decided to write this letter'. You should say something more formal."
Tommy smiled, "Like what?"
"It would sound more professional if you said, 'I decided to make direct contact' instead."
"And that's why you've been promoted from wife to secretary, Syb."
Sybil rolled her eyes with a smile and motioned for him to continue, assuming her position once more.
"Mr. Churchill, you should know that I am a former British soldier, and if you look at my war record, you will see that I fought bravely at Verdun and at the Somme."
"You should mention your actions at Mon, too."
"My dramatic girl."
"It's a very impressive resume!"
"As you wish," he spoke before continuing his dictation. "Also you will see that my actions at Mon saved thousands of Allied lives. I know that you resigned your ministerial position and the safety of an office to go and fight on the front line with the men. I read that you fought bravely, Mr. Churchill. Therefore, I hope I will be treated in any dealings we have with a degree of respect, soldier to soldier."
