Jack ran to the glass doors and barged in to the middle of the room where the stairway could be seen. Passing by a couple engaging in a kiss of lust and passion, his eyes darted around the area, filled with columns and paintings.
"Well, hi there, darlin'!" a voice greeted.
Jack turned his head and was met with two women in lacy lingerie with silk robes. They smiled seductively at him and stepped closer.
"Where's Lora Mae?" Jack asked them hastily.
One of the women fixed her curled blonde hair and opened her robe more, revealing the way the white lace teddy hugged her body and revealed her legs and decollate. She put a hand on her hip as she proudly displayed herself to the young man.
"She's busy upstairs," she told him.
Without a second thought, Jack turned around and ran up the stairs while the two women called out to him.
"Wait a minute! You can't go up there!"
Jack darted past another couple and made his way to the middle of the stairway to catch his breath. When he looked up, he could see a familiar-looking woman descend the stairs in a silk robe and curled hair.
"Lora Mae, where's Ginny?" he asked.
Lora Mae smirked and rested her hand on the railing, puffing out her chest as she retained her sultry gaze.
"Oh, hello, Jack," she said.
Jack stepped closer. "What happened? Where's Ginny?"
Lora Mae tilted her head and spoke in her smooth accented voice, "Well, I don't know. I haven't seen her."
She felt two hands grasp her dark robe. She saw Jack's eyes grow more furious and persistent.
"You're lying to me. I want to know where Ginny is."
Lora Mae smirked and placed a hand on his bicep.
"Jack, what a woman does with her body is her own business."
She attempted to free herself from Jack's grasp, but he stayed put and gripped tighter.
"She's my wife and I want to know where she is, Lora Mae."
He gripped tighter until the woman raised her voice.
"Alright, Jack!" she told him, "She's at the old midwife's place. She told me you're related, she's getting rid of the baby."
Jack threw her out of his grasp and stared at her for a moment before running back down the stairs. Related, he wondered. He remembered what Jeanene told him, and now, he hears Lora Mae tell him something different. The thought of it all confused him, and he hurried to his truck, speeding through the indigo sky. He slowed next to a small house and rushed inside. There was minimal lighting that only made the room seem more mysterious and cruel. He called out his lover's name. He was greeted back by the painful moans of Ginny, and he followed the noise. He opened two doors that met in the middle and was met with pure horror. His wife, laying on a bed, bloodied and moaning. Her eyes were closed, but she was still breathing. She was weak. Jack stared at the sight in shock.
"She's bleedin' bad inside. I swear I've done the best I could!" the "midwife" exclaimed sorrowfully, "You better get her to a doctor quick."
Jack carried his delicate lover in his arms and treaded out of the room of death. When he brought her into his truck and stepped inside, he sped faster than he did when coming to her. The life of his lover was in his hands, and he only had the road and the moon to guide him to safety. The lone truck dashed, the engine roaring. He searched for a near hospital in the darkness. He felt alone, like nobody was around to witness the pain growing within him. Ginny moaned helplessly next to him as he steered. He glanced at her occasionally, and the tortured look on her face mixed with the cries of pain caused tears to build up in Jack's eyes as his face grew warmer.
He continued to speed down the road and nearly met a black car going in the opposite direction. He slowed for a moment before continuing to speed off when the car was out of sight. He continued to drive silently when he heard words in between moans from Ginny.
"I didn't wanna lose you, I didn't wanna lose you."
"You'll never lose me, Ginny," Jack told her, his eyes on the road in front of him, "But why'd you go there?"
Ginny continued to cry, "I was getting fixed so we wouldn't have any more babies.."
"But why?" Jack asked.
Sniffling, Ginny responded, "Because you're my brother..."
Pain and sorrow built in Jack's eyes. Dark pieces of hair stuck to his forehead from the sweat. He sighed and shook his head.
"It was a big lie, Ginny," he said, "It was one big lie!"
His face contorted as he began to cry more. He could see a bright light coming from behind him as he continued to drive.
"No," Ginny said as she hyperventilated. Her eyes were closed as her body grew weaker. She attempted to make more words come out, even when it pained her.
"We can go away.. No one will ever have to know.. We-we can adopt babies!"
She repeated her suggestion of adoption as she cried when a horn sounded loudly from behind them. Jack's gaze jumped from his dying lover to the light behind him. He tried to speed up, but the light followed. When he looked back to see the car behind him, he saw that behind the blinding glare was the black car he passed by just minutes ago. He tried to analyze the driver's features in the dark, the silhouette of a man gripping the wheel. When light drew over the car, he could see an angry glare. The car sped up and was almost next to Jack. It moved closer to him, attempting to knock them over. Jack could hear yelling come from the car, but he was unable to tell what for. As he drove, the car attempted to drive into him from the side, though Jack maintained a firm grip on the steering wheel. He was going 70 miles per hour and the number only grew. He almost didn't notice the bright orange-yellow sign indicating a one-lane bridge. Jack sped up more in an attempt to get in front of the car. When he approached the bridge, the truck made a skidding sound and dashed like an animal freeing from a predator's grasp. While still being quick, Jack steadily made his way across the wooden bridge. It was calm for a moment until the sounding of a horn could be heard again. He continued to drive, and soon, he exited the bridge and was back to regular dirt roads. He moved faster, but the black car followed them again. Jack looked forward as he drove when he heard a firing shot coming from the car. The truck rocked, making the unconsious Ginny's head fall on Jack's shoulder. He knew the man had damaged the truck, but he had to move away. He tried and he sped until he eventually drove off the road into a grassy area and came to a stop. The sudden movement jerked Jack's head against the wheel, hitting it. He panted as he looked to his lover, terrified of her lack of movement and response. He feared the thought of the girl's precious life falling out of his hands. His breathing slowed slightly when he noticed the rising and falling of her chest. He held her in his strong arms and gently stroked her golden hair. Please, he pleaded in his head, please still be with me.
"Okay, Hot Rod. Get out!"
Jack turned his head behind him and was met with the glare of a man, his arms in front of him as he held a shotgun. Jack moved his arm from around his wife and he sat up, looking at the cruel expression of the man.
"What do you want?" he asked.
"Her."
Jack looked back at Ginny, tired and resting. He looked back at the man.
"I've been chasing her clear across two states!"
Jack attempted to reason with the man as his eyes glittered from tears.
"She's hurt, and I got to get her to a doctor," he told him.
The man shook his head as he smirked. "Oh, sure you do. I wasn't born yesterday, kid."
Jack moved his hands over the wheel as his eyes darted anxiously. His breathing accelerated and he attempted to explain to the man again, trying his best to remain calm through the horrific moment.
"Look, she's bleedin' inside!"
Jack avoided the man's gaze when he stepped closer to him, his hand firmly gripping the shotgun.
"She can see a doctor back in Noble."
Jack threw the door open and pushed the man away. The two tumbled to the ground and landed jabs at each other. They fought like animals above the grass. Jack attempted to strike the man, though his strong body felt weaker from the sorrow he faced tonight. Through his cries, he rumbled with the man as he thought only of protecting his lover. He could hear her cries again from the truck. She woke up, he thought, I must get back to her. I must be alive to see her.
Ginny could hear the fight from outside and her heart rate accelerated when a few shots could be heard. She continued to listen in and grew terrified from the shots she heard. She called out his name. She called until there was silence, and she could see the figure of a young man approach her and hold her protectively in his arms.
"He's just knocked out. We'll take his car," Jack spoke softly with a hint of strains in his tone. He carried his pained wife as she continued to cry. His treads were slow as he approached the black car. The man was unconscious and was not to be awoken for another minute or so. The darkness surrounded the lovers as they cried together. The protective hold of Jack's arms comforted Ginny, but the feeling within her only grew more agonizing. She breathed quickly as yellow strands rested on her face. Jack's breathing matched hers as he stared at his lover's sorrowful face. He continued to walk with her in his arms. The night darkened everything around him, and the only thing that could be seen was the ominous light of the moon through the fog.
