'Baby I fall in love again,
Come every summer time'
--
On his final day before leaving for Toronto, Gilbert knocked on the front door of Green Gables.
Anne came to the front door beaming. Gilbert hadn't seen her since her travels to Charlottetown with Rachel.
So when Anne opened the door, revealing a new golden dress and her hair pinned up, Gilbert did a double take.
Gilbert never realized before this moment that Anne was becoming a woman. She wasn't the braids-wearing, startlingly red-headed girl he met in the woods years ago. She was regal and emulating light.
Best of all, she was Anne.
"Anne," his mouth gaped, "you...."
Anne giggled. Seeing Gilbert dumbfounded was one of her favorite sights in the whole world.
Instead of letting him babble, Anne took his face in her hands and kissed him quickly.
"Mrs. Lynde took me to Charlottetown to prepare for college."
Gilbert shook his head, still enamored, "I see that."
Anne took his arm and they began walking towards the gate to exit Green Gables.
"Where are we going?" Anne tugged lightly on Gilbert's arm.
Since it was technically Gilbert's final night in Avonlea, he insisted he be in charge of arranging their outing. Anne wanted to fight for equal opportunity to plan their last adventure in Avonlea, but making that argument meant admitting out loud they wouldn't see each other for a while.
They didn't want to think about that.
Gilbert was proud of his planning, "Do you remember one of the first landmarks in Avonlea you named?"
"The White Way of Delight?"
"No."
"The Haunted Forest?"
Gilbert began to sweat. His smooth setup wasn't working as he planned, "No."
"The Lake of Shining Waters?" Anne bounced a little.
Gilbert let his arm shake with Anne's excitement and took a sigh of relief, "That's the one."
"We're going to the lake?" Anne imagined a sunny picnic by the lake dreamily.
"Not just to it."
"Matthew only did some swimming lessons with me so please don't tell me we're going in-"
"No, no, Anne, on. We're going on the lake." Gilbert shook his head in amused disbelief at her imagination.
Anne breathed a sigh of relief, "Marvelous."
The two walked through the woods soaking in the sun and desperately trying to avoid thinking about how Gilbert was leaving so soon.
Gilbert had a boat and picnic basket ready upon their arrival to the lake. Even with her record of clumsiness, Anne successfully got into the boat without a scratch and Gilbert rowed them out into the lake.
Anne scanned the scene, "This is a dream I didn't know I had."
She truly never imagined such a moment. Floating on a lake she attached herself to since the moment she laid her eyes upon it in a boat with a boy she'd somehow fallen in love with.
And it wasn't just any boy, it was Gilbert. Her kindred spirit.
Gilbert let Anne's day dream run. He just gazed at her as her head went from one giddy fantasy to another.
