Y/n, a Slytherin girl, the only one that can beat the Dark Lord's son in a duel. They are rivals in everything, from their deadly duels to the grades on their latest potions essay. They could not hate each other more than they do. Or at least... tha...
I step onto the Hogwarts Express and haul my trunk along. Why did I pack so much? I walk down the aisle, trying to spot my friends. I haven't seen Pansy or Astoria since June, so I'm sure I'm going to get all the gossip about their Summers.
As I'm looking into each compartment, one pair of eyes catches mine. Staring back at me, are the dark eyes of Mattheo Riddle. He points at me, then runs his thumb across his neck, grinning. I continue walking, ignoring him. He thinks he's winning, but he'll be the one begging for mercy at the end of the year.
I continue looking and finally spot Astoria and Pansy in a compartment. Opening the door, squeals and questions fill my ears, as I'm crushed in a hug. I can only catch glimpses of phrases as they talk over each other but I understand enough to realise they both want to know how my Summer was.
'Girls, calm down,' I say as I pull them off of me and sit down. 'My Summer was great! I'm starting to get the hang of non-verbal spells and I memorised 3 more potion recipes.'
'That's a great Summer for you? You basically did homework,' Astoria looks at me as if I've gone mad.
'It's Y/n, of course that was a great Summer for her. Anything to beat Riddle. You know, you're a bit obsessed with him,' Pansy smirks at me. I roll my eyes. She reads too many romance novels.
'I'm not obsessed with Riddle, I'm obsessed with beating him. If it was anyone else, it'd be the same,' I'm telling the truth, but for some reason Pansy never believes me. She thinks I'm part of some enemies to lovers romance novel or something. 'Anyway, how were your Summers?'
The train ride speeds by, as Pansy tells us about her trip to Paris and Astoria complains about how all the hot boys are Muggles. I've never understood her, really. She obsesses over boys. Don't misunderstand me, some boys are definitely worth the talk and I love to hear the gossip, but I don't think Astoria ever thinks of anything else. She spends more time trying to flirt with boys than she does studying.
The train arrives at Hogsmeade and we step out onto the platform. We follow the professors to the carriages and ride them to Hogwarts, continuing our conversation. I zone out until I hear what Astoria's talking about.
'I heard Cedric broke up with Cho,' she tells Pansy. This catches my attention because I sort of have a crush on Cedric. I mean, winner of the Triwizard Tournament, good looks and he's a gentleman! What's not to like? Plus, we'd be a great duo. He won the Tournament, and I'm the only student who can beat the Dark Lord's son in a duel.
And now he's single? Might have to shoot my shot.

I make my way down to the dungeons and say the password to the Slytherin common room. The door swings open to reveal classy dark green couches, desks with chairs and a warm fire, already blazing, at the other end of the room. I turn to my left and make my way to the girls' dorms, heading up the staircase to the 6th floor.
There, I find my dorm, with Y/l/n, Parkinson and Greengrass written on it. Rooming with these two is so fun, we have the best girls' nights. Walking in, I find Pansy already unpacking and Astoria on her bed, with all her new dresses laid out.
'Y/n! I was just about to go find you,' Astoria said as I closed the door. 'What do you think about this dress?' She held up a pale blue dress with a gorgeous pattern on the top and a skirt that flowed smoothly when she moved it.

'That's beautiful, Astoria! You need to wear that to one of the dances this year!' Hogwarts has 3 regular dances, each year. The Yule Ball, the New Years party and the end of year dance on the Summer Solstice. After the Triwizard Tournament in 4th year, we decided we needed more dances like the Yule Ball to have some more fun. The students convinced the professors and now we have 3, plus the parties the houses throw every now and then, but they're way less formal.
'Thanks, Y/n! I'm going to wear it to the New Years party. What about you? Do you have any new dresses?'
'No, I'll have to go to Hogsmeade before Christmas. But now, you two can help me decide on what dresses I should get!' I smile at the thought. The girls have amazing taste in dresses.
We get ready for bed and go to sleep. School starts tomorrow and if I'm going to beat Riddle this year, I need to be awake throughout the lessons.

Thank you for reading the start of my story :) There is much more to come from Riddle and Y/n's rivalry, you just have to wait and see. Tomorrow we'll interact with him more than just a look ;)
