That night after the three tributes ate the squirrels Carver caught, they find themselves sitting in silence. For the first time in the entire experience, Carver actually finds herself dozing off. She hasn't slept a full night since before being sent here. But before all this happened was when she wasn't fighting for her life. Katniss watches as Carver begins to nod off and takes it upon herself to keep watch for the night. She pushes Peeta's hair out of his face and checks his temperature. His fever seems to be breaking, but she's not holding her breath as it has lowered before and returned.
The hunter keeps her eyes trained on the sky outside, zoning out. Time passes quickly without her even knowing. The silent snores coming from Peeta and the little twitches that come from Carver don't pull her out of her thoughts. Her thoughts consist of Prim and Gale, and how she might truly have a chance to get back to them. While there is a certain positivity that comes with that, it is ruined when she remembers Carver. If it came down to it, she would choose to save herself and Peeta, but it doesn't make the situation any less complicated as Carver has been there for her for the majority of this game.
Her eyes are torn from the now fully risen sun when a high pitched groan emanates from the girl in the corner of the cave. Katniss's eyes fall on Carver who is stretching her back from the uncomfortable position she slept in. As the sleepiness leaves Carver's system her mind clears and she realizes she fell asleep when she self-assigned herself to keep watch. She looks over to Katniss who is already looking at her, "I'm so sorry." She rubs her eyes, "I didn't meant to fall asleep."
"It's okay." Katniss says. "It's probably good you got some sleep in. I don't think I've seen you sleep a full night since we've been together.
"Its because she hasn't, '' Peeta's morning voice croaks out as he slowly sits up from his lying position.
Both girls turn to him and relief flushes through their veins when they see the wound on his leg is almost completely healed. "Oh my God, Peeta!" Katniss exclaims, pointing to his leg. She hadn't noticed it healing due to being so lost in her thoughts
Carver moves over to the two and she stares in shock, "It's almost completely healed."
He laughs out of excitement, "I hardly feel a thing."
Katniss grasps his hand, "We could go home." She grins. "We could. We're the only team left."
Carver feels her stomach drop as she remembers Ryder's body hitting the floor after her knife lodged itself in his chest. Katniss and Peeta separate from the hug they are sharing and look over at Carver who has no emotion whatsoever on her face. Carver feels their stare and waves them off, "Relax." She rolls her eyes saucily. "You can celebrate. My feelings aren't that fragile." She pops her back in a multitude of places before rising and securing her knife belt around her waist. She grabs her axe and rests it on her shoulder. "What are we waiting for?" Carver raises an eyebrow. "If he can walk, we should get moving. We don't want to stay in the same place for too long." She advises before placing her water canteen in her backpack and slinging it over her shoulder.
