I looked away from my fingers and glanced over at Arisu who had his eyes firmly set on Hatter and as I stared at the boy, my mind drifted and I began to think about life before the games.
Hatter claims to promise a way out once all games are completed but only for a single person... is it really worth all the effort?
Is the life I lead before worth experiencing without my previous friends...?
"My visa needs to be reissued soon."
This sentence caused an uneasy silence around the room as glances were shared, each person not wishing to speak up next until Mira softly closed the book in her hands turning to face her superior.
"Respectfully, there is a way to earn a visa. A hearts game... is a game that plays with people's minds and emotions. We use a decoy we know will die and fix the game so that you survive. Arisu cleared the Seven of Hearts game. I guess that means... If he can do it, then anyone can!"
"Arisu, you cleared the Seven of Hearts? Can you give us any advice?"
This seemed like an antagonising comment and caused unease within me. I took a sharp inhale before wiping my palms on my skirt, looking up at Hatter who chuckled to himself.
"There's no way to predict when a Hearts game may appear. Don't forget, we only find out what the game is after registration closes."
Ann made a good point and I found myself nodding, just waiting for someone to object to her simple observation. Kuzuryū was the first to speak up.
"True, but the theory of probability should help us determine the arena."
Apparently, this agitated Hatter as he slammed his fist onto the tabletop "I don't need pretentious theories. I will participate in the next game."
He rose to his feet now walking around the room, "I don't care if it's a Heart or a Spade. I can clear them all! And I'll be there when the Ten of Hearts appears. The cards are on the table. Our day of departure is near! Executive, you're in charge while I'm away. Meeting adjourned!"I watched as other executive left the room, and as I rose to my feet followed by Chishiya my eyes met Hatters and I watched his lip curve into a smile as he called out my name, "(name)! Come here..."
I stopped walking towards the exit and instead awkwardly shuffled out of the way of the blonde who had stopped walking due to me coming to an abrupt stand still. I muttered an apology before he left the room leaving Hatter and I alone.
I approached the man before stopping a good distance away from him, still weary of the sinister aura he had surrounding him earlier in the meeting, but he didn't seem to care, walking closer to me until we were practically nose to nose.
However, he said nothing only looking down at me and so I coughed muttering "Was there something you needed Hatter?"
He seemed to ponder for a moment before sighing and taking a step back "There is something I do need to tell you (name), however it can wait until after my game..."
My now frowning expression must having given away my confusion as his hand reached out towards me placing itself on the back of my head, allowing it to tangle amongst my hair as he brough my ear towards his mouth.
"Find me after the game..." with this final statement he leant down placing a kiss on my forehead before swiftly exiting the meeting room, leaving me standing alone with pink dusting my cheeks and an air of confusion surrounding me.
