"That's fantastic, Y/N! I'm so glad you had a good time," Zevon beamed. "And please, call me Zevon. Mr. Necrodopolis makes me feel old."
"But you don't look a day over twenty-five, sir! Definitely in your prime!" Y/N protested, determined to boost his spirits.
Zevon chuckled again, a warm rumble that resonated with a paternal affection. "Stop trying to make me feel better about myself, Y/N!" he teased.
Y/N, catching sight of her cousin, decided to greet the family. Bucky, ever the drama king, bolted from the bleachers to join them.
"Aunt Missy, Uncle Dale! The crash was gnarly, but I totally saved Addison and Y/N," he declared, draping a heroic arm around each girl. Aunt Missy's smile was a touch too polite, clearly skeptical of his self-proclaimed bravery.
"Anyone as awesome as me would've done the same," Bucky continued, unfazed. "Although, let's be honest, I am super brave."
Y/N opened her mouth to retort, "Was that before-" but Bucky cut her off, shoving a hand over her mouth. The look on his parents' faces sent a snort of laughter bubbling from his chest. "She's delusional!" he wheezed.
Y/N narrowed her eyes at him. Playfully, she licked his hand to the sound of his disgusted yelp. He wiped frantically at the offending moisture, muttering, "You're disgusting..." under his breath.
"Oh, really? I thought I was the delusional one." She couldn't help but smirk at his flustered reaction.
Addison rushed to assure her parents, "Mom, Dad, everything is fine!" Considering the "werewolf encounter," Y/N understood their concern. History painted a terrifying picture of these creatures.
However, Y/N found herself holding back scepticism. She believed in judging people on their own merits, not based on dusty legends. Besides, hypocrisy wouldn't look good on her – witches faced similar prejudice in those same history books. Werewolves and witches, likely demonized for things they hadn't even done, their stories twisted by fear.
Suddenly, a flash of a memory jolted her – fire, flashes of purple. Panic flared, and she clenched her jaw, willing the vision to dissipate. Control, she had to maintain control.
History lessons did offer a clue, though. The Seabrook settlers had plundered an ancient moonstone, something likely precious to the werewolves. Used it for personal gain, power, the usual selfish human motives. Her guess? The settlers and werewolves clashed over the stolen stone, probably not a pleasant encounter for either side.
"It's not fine at all! We're surrounded by werewolves!" Uncle Dale boomed, shattering the fragile calm.
"Yeah, and I'm basically a walking buffet!" Bucky interjected, gesturing dramatically at himself. 'Maybe you should be first,' Y/N quipped to herself, a wry smile playing on her lips. Even amidst the chaos, she found his antics mildly amusing.
"Someone has to take action!" someone shouted.
Aunt Missy, ever the decisive one, stepped forward. "Someone will. Hold my purse," she declared, shoving it into her bewildered husband's hands. With a determined stride, she marched to the stage where the city council stood. Grabbing the gavel, she slammed it to silence the crowd.
"By order of the city council, effective immediately, all anti-monster laws are reinstated!"
A cheer erupted through the hall, some celebrating, others confused and disheartened. The announcement hung heavy in the air, a grim reminder of the prejudice that simmered just beneath the surface.
"Zed, we need to talk!" Addison's voice cut through the chaos, drawing Y/N's attention. Her gaze fell upon her cousin and Zed standing awkwardly together.
