I rushed around getting ready for the puja that was being held at the Singh house today. Regarding the required puja ingredients, I had asked the driver to secretly bring them yesterday while Chachi ji was preoccupied with Divisa's engagement preparations.
Just as I was putting the final touches on my simple yet elegant ensemble, my phone rang. A quick glance showed it was Daimaa calling from the orphanage. I debated letting it go to voicemail, not wanting to disturb the tender scene of Anubhav and little Aarush playing together. But something made me accept the call.
"Hello? Daimaa ji?" I answered softly.
Daimaa didn't even let me finish my greeting before bursting out excitedly, "Haseena! Tu soch bhi nahi sakti aaj kya hua! Woh industry wale aaye the humse maafi maangne aur kaha ki woh humare ground ki safai bhi karwayenge!"
My brow furrowed in confusion. "Out of court? Settlement?"
"Haan, haan!" she continued animatedly. "Out of court settlement ki baat kar rahe the lekin vakeel ne kaha unki baat nahi maane kyuki court mein humari hi jeet hogi!"
That caught my attention. A lawyer? "Konsa lawyer, Daimaa ji?"
"Arey batao khud hi tune lawyer bheja humare orphanage ke liye aur anjaan ban rahi hai!" She sounded puzzled by my befuddlement. "Lawyer Vinay Bedi?"
My head spun dizzily as I tried to make sense of her words. Vinay Bedi? But after the traumatic events of yesterday with that vile Rajesh Khanna, I hadn't actually engaged any lawyers. So who was this Vinay Bedi? And how did he get involved?
Glancing over towards the corner where Anubhav played peek-a-boo with Aarush, realization slowly dawned. Could he be the one secretly handling this? My gaze drifted over his handsome features as he laughed joyfully with his nephew.
Clearing my throat, I managed to reply, "Uh Daimaa, mai aapko thodi der mein phone karti hoon, kuch kaam hai abhi."
"Acha thik hai, beta!" She laughed lightly. "Arey mai bhi na bina samay dekhe tujhe phone laga diya, apna kaam kar beta tu, aur haan khana khane mat bhulna aur agar chutti mile to milne aana!"
"Bilkul, Daimaa," I assured her before disconnecting the call.
Anubhav was fully focused on entertaining the giggling toddler, so I opted to text him instead of interrupting the precious bonding moment.
'Kya aapne humare orphanage ki help ki?'
I coughed loudly to catch his attention, then motioned to his phone when he looked up quizzically. Plucking it from his pocket, he read the message and simply typed back a cryptic 'Hmm'.
My curiosity piqued, I rapidly fired off another text. 'Aapko kaise pata chala ki orphanage mein help ki jarurat hai?'
A few moments later, his response came through: 'Kya karu kisi se mitrta ki hai, lekin humara jo Mitra hai woh humse apni pareshaniya baanta hi nahi to humne khud pata laga liya kya pareshani hai.'
I couldn't help but smile at his sweetly chiding words. This entire situation didn't feel quite real - a powerful businessman going to such covert lengths to support the humble orphanage that meant so much to me. Impulsively, I typed out a heartfelt 'Thank you' and sent it off.
