CHO RAMI ENTERED the assembly hall with her arm linked with one of her best friends, yoon hera. the two girls had grins on their faces as they walked in, dressed in the jooshin uniform with maroon ties around their necks. next to them was lee woojin, another close friend to rami.what tie you wear is important because indicates your status at jooshin. wearing the maroon ties means they were the elite, they are on the top of the pyramid. having a navy tie meant that they were a scholarship kid, the low tier. although the two went to school together there was a big divide between the two groups of students.
scholarship students wouldn't even think to touch someone like kim rian, who basically owned the school, or any of his close friends. all the people who he hung out with were basically set up for success by their families.
kim rian is the heir to the jooshin group, jung jaei's family runs the jaeyool group, yoon hera's family runs a trading company, lee woojin is the son of a famous politician, and cho rami who's father is the ceo large technology company.
scholarship kids were chosen to attend jooshin. there was a test that they had to take, it is the only way to get in as an outsider. the last student they had, kang inhan was killed. after the incident, the school somehow covered it up. they thought jooshin would stop taking scholarship kids, but they were wrong.
"a new semester had begun at the most prestigious school in korea, jooshin high, where we take pride in our time-honored traditions. in the spirit of those traditions, we're putting jooshin's motto, "noblesse oblige" into practice. to celebrate this new semester, let's welcome our new scholarship recipient who was hand selected out of quite a few applicants."
"kang ha. come."
"yes, ma'am" the boy raised his hand.
"scholarship student never last here. why admit them anymore?" woojin scoffed. hera who was next to him responded, "because they want to give the poor kids a chance too. "noblesse oblige" you know? they can't forget that."
"the principal?" woojin asked.
"no, the school owners, rian's mom and dad." hera said.
"i'm surprised they're admitting a scholarship student after what happened." rami responded sat in the aisle on the other side of woojin.
the new student who now stood at the podium tested the mic before speaking, "good morning, students, seniors, and underclassmen. my name is kang ha. as the first student to ace the jooshin high scholarship—" he said with a smile on his face before being interrupted by the doors in the back opening.
students turned their heads to look and saw kim rian walk in with his friend beside him. "as the first student to ace the test—" the boy tried to continue. rian walked down the aisle and took a seat next to rami.
"you're late." hera told the boy who continued to look forward.
"rian, you always entrance don't you?" rami joked.
"uh, so, where was i? oh! the exam! right. i got the highest grade!" the boy said proudly.
"he has such a cute smile. he's got this puppy dog energy, right?" hera said turning to rami to get her opinion. "mhmm you're right like a beagle or golden retriever." the girl nodded.
"cuter than mine, rami?" woojin smiled and rami pushed his face away from her. rami looked over to rian, who was staring at his lock screen of him and jaei. she suddenly left korea and hasn't come back since. rami frowned knowing how much rian missed her.
rami looked over again and saw the many texts rian had sent to her. "no reply?" rami asked and the boy shook his head, "no."
"she'll be back sooner than you know." rami said "she's just taking a break, rian."
"i look forward to the year ahead." the boy concluded his speech with a bow and went back to his seat.
"that concludes our opening ceremonies. now, students i'll ask you to begin making your way to your classes, please," the new scholarship kid immediately stood and was quickly pulled back down to his seat. the students waited for rian and his other friends to get up and leave before getting up themselves to head to classes.
hera, rami, bada, and yeji stayed behind to talk. they saw kang ha asking for directions to his class. the boy said a few words to him before walking away, leaving the boy confused. kang ha stood up and began to walk out before hera stopped him.
"you lost? they'll show you where to go." she said pointing to the two girls. "give me your number." hera said holding her phone out to the boy who seemed confused.
"what for?"
"well, i didn't expect that. i figured you might want someone to help you out. like if you have any questions." the boy nodded and put his number in her phone and thanked hera.
"what's you handle?"
"we'll follow you back."
"i'm not on anything." the boy replied.
"you're not on anything?" rami asked.
"no social media?" hera said in surprise before looking back at rami, who shrugged. "there you go. i should get going. see you guys," the boy said before walking out.
"wow, he's such a weirdo."
the four teens sat in the lounge with their lunch in of them on the coffee table. hera was touching up her hair while rami sat next to her reapplying her lip products. woojin was still eating his lunch and rian stared at his phone screen.
"any classes left?" hera asked breaking the silence.
"i'm all done. you have one more, right?" woojin asked. rian set his phone down and looked at his wristwatch, "at 4:00. social studies." he answered.
"i'm done. i think i'm going home soon." rami answered.
woojin's phone buzzed, making a smile creep up to his face. that smile didn't go unnoticed by rami. he walked out to take the call and rami's eyes followed him till he was out of the room with a frown.
"woojin's so weird lately. is he dating anyone? rami, what happened to your little thing with him?" hera asked making the girl sigh. "don't know. he barely texts me anymore." she fell back into the couch.
for a while last year and last semester, woojin and rami had been hooking up until woojin stopped texting her to come over. they never really talked about it after that. rami was upset but she didn't know why. why was she jealous? it was just a friends with benefits thing right?
"why don't we find you someone? one of rian's football friends?" hera asked making rian look up, "choi yunseok?" she suggested.
"ha, you're funny. i wouldn't let that asshole touch me. plus he's dating bada, remember?" rami asked. she grabbed her things and stood up. "anyways, i'm going to go now. i have some things to do at home. bye bye." the girl waved before leaving the room.
