Hanako placed her bag on her desk in her room after coming back from work. Looking out the window, she let out a weary sigh. The previous weekend had been full of marking, but today she finally gave back her students their exam papers, and to her happiness, no one had failed.
Since this week was the last week before the term break, there wasn't much teaching that needed to be done. All she had to do was give them their summer homework, and it would be a free period for the students to do whatever they wanted. Other than preparing the students' summer homework, Hanako didn't need to do much for the day. Most teachers had parents to call, but she didn't have an assigned class.
Sometimes Hanako did feel like she missed the human world. But...
"I'll never forgive Mom and Dad," her eyes hardened. "I'll protect Iruma. And I have Grandpa, Opera-san and now Balam-san as well."
Sighing, Hanako dropped onto the bed. "I can do this."
~~~
"Now, now," Sullivan shook his finger. "Don't be showing that 'I don't want to' face."
Sullivan had ordered Kalego to make home visits for each of his students. And since he's the principal and a higher rank, Kalego couldn't object to it. Though, she could feel his irritation and anger from where she was. If the dark atmosphere around him didn't show enough.
Hanako didn't really care since it wasn't her business, but did Grandpa have to make Kalego angry while she had work in the staff room? She would be the one to have to sit next to him for the rest of the day.
On the day of the visit, Hanako arrived home quite late. Since the semester was almost over, teachers had to finalise some administrative work. With Balam and Dali in charge of the workload, Hanako had to take on additional tasks as well.
"Nee-san. Welcome home!"
"I'm back. Why are you still in your uniform?" Hanako asks as she closed the front door of the house.
"Kalego-sensei is coming for the house visit, remember? I wanted to ask whether you'd be there for the meeting as well."
"Oh, right. I had forgotten about it." Hanako had completely forgotten that today was the home visit. It had been quite a busy day for her.
"Probably not, I am pretty tired today. Isn't Grandpa and Opera meeting Kalego-sensei, though?"
"Yeah, it's okay, Nee-san. You should get some rest. Grandpa and Opera-san will be there," Iruma reassured her. Hanako hummed in agreement.
"I'm going to change and bathe, so I'll come out after Kalego-sensei leaves."
"Ok, I'll tell you about it afterwards," Iruma said just as the doorbell rang throughout the house. "I better get that."
"Hmm," Hanako waved as she head to her room.
After a quick and refreshing shower, Hanako changed into her comfortable clothes. She decided to tidy her room while waiting, organising the scattered papers and books on her desk and throughout the space. With her room now clean and orderly, she realised that an hour had already passed. Feeling hungry and knowing that dinner would be served soon, Hanako ventured out of her room. As she walked towards the main living hall, she heard the murmur of conversation, piquing her curiosity.
"Iruma! Opera-san!" Hanako called out but then stopped abruptly, seeing a purple bird being blow-dried. "Uhhh... I'll leave."
"Hey! Don't just walk away!" Kalego shouted after her.
"Hanako-sama, do you need anything?" Opera asked, now brushing Kalego in his bird form. She noticed Iruma looking guiltily off to the side.
"Just going to the dinning hall. You know what, maybe—"
"Ah, your right. It's almost time for dinner. Kalego-kun will be staying as well." Opera ignored the 'Who says I'm staying?!' and continued on. "Alright, here Hanako-sama. Don't leave alright, Kalego-kun."
Opera placed Kalego in her arms and handed her the brush before she even realised what was going on.
"What—" Hanako turn to find Opera already gone. Iruma, her sweet brother, decides that it was the time to run out of the room.
"Iruma!" Hanako yelled after him. 'That brat!' she thought. A drop of sweat trickled down her face, perplexed on what to do or say in this situation.
Clearing her throat after a few seconds. "I am so sorry."
Kalego let out an exasperated sigh. "You can let go of me now."
"Right, of course!" Hanako dropped her hand to her side.
It was the first time holding 'Flufflego', as what the students called him, and like what they said, the fur was really soft. Very soft.
Other than apologising, Hanako didn't really know what else to say. Over the few months she'd known him, they had hardly talked. The exception was when having a conversation with other teachers, mostly Balam. The only other time they had interacted was during greetings or small talks when they sat beside each other in the staffroom.
"I'll be leaving before they come back," Kalego floated past Hanako but suddenly a puff of smoke enveloped her vision. She felt herself falling onto the floor, a body landing above hers which thankfully did not crushed her.
Hanako groaned in pain from the impact of hitting the floor and bumping her head. Squinting up, she found herself staring straight up at wide purple eyes. Kalego's arms caged her to stop himself from crushing her, and her right arm pressed onto his chest. There was a slight pause, Hanako couldn't look away from the striking purple eyes that stare straight back at her.
"Hana— Oh?" Both Kalego and Hanako turned to the voice to find Sullivan standing there with a raised eyebrow. "Was I interrupting something?"
Eyes widening, they pushed each other away and scrambled to stand. Horrified at how someone had caught them in that position.
"No!"
Sullivan just looked amused. "You didn't tell me that you and Kalego-kun are—"
"Grandpa! It's not like that! He just turned back..." Hanako tried to explain but all she got was a widened smirk. She could feel her face heat up from embarrassment.
"As much as I'd love the idea of great grandchildren—"
"Grandpa!" Hanako was horrified. She turned redder when Sullivan started teasing her. She tried looking at Kalego for help but found him looking away, ears slightly red. This only made her more embarrassed and if possible, redder.
"Dinners ready," Opera announced as they came back into the room. All Hanako could do was walk to the dining hall, away from the situation.
Dinner was a very awkward and embarrassing affair.
