Kate had been dropped off at—actually, she had no idea where she had been dropped off. But Percy had grabbed her hand as soon as Grover left for the bathroom, and pulled her into the nearest taxi.
"Where am I going?" she hissed, "Percy, I don't know where to go!"
Percy handed her some spare change. "I-I don't know, just go somewhere, and don't follow me." He left without another word, walking off in the opposite direction, his hands tucked into his pockets, eyes trained onto the floor.
So it wasn't surprising when Kate handed the driver some money and asked him to follow the green-eyed boy.
"Ma'am, you sure? That sounds pretty cre—"
"Stalkerish? Yeah, I guess so. Can you please just do it? People are acting so weird these days." She huffed, back sinking into her seat. "I'll pay you extra." She added at the end, and the driver pressed his foot to the pedal, probably already thinking of the loads of money he'll get. Kate read his nametag to herself: Cal.
It was a seemingly normal name. His blonde hair brushed out to his shoulders and a cap was placed onto his head. Blue eyes sparkling, he looked like what she'd picture as one of those California Surfer boys.
The gagging smell of alcohol stayed within the car, and paired with the cigarette popped into Cal's mouth, it was absolutely revolting. She grabbed the cigar out of his mouth and tossed it outside without another word. The driver stared at her, gap-mouthed.
"B-but—"
"I'm doing it for your own good." She told him. "And mine, but mostly you."
Cal gripped the steering wheel tighter. "You don't know who you're messing with, foolish mortal." He spat.
Kate shivered at his tone but straightened up nonetheless. "I'm not messing with much here, I'm just helping you. So you lost a $5 cigar, probably even less. It's not much, and you can buy more."
The rest of the car ride was silent, par the string of curses leaving Cal's mouth as he glared at her. She ignored him.
When Percy finally reached his house, Kate slumped back in relief, finally satisfied.
