It was cold. Too damn cold, even for the end of November, and your heart felt like a frozen ball in your chest, making you clutch your chest with your gloved hand while breathing out heavily, small puffs of your breath freezing in the still air, floating up towards the full moon. You blinked back tears as you looked up to the sky, oddly clear after the blizzard yesterday, trying to trace the constellations with only your wilting gaze. You stuffed your hands deep into your pockets, trying to retain any sort of warmth with your fingers, and wished that you had just listened for once, just obeyed his only rule. After all, it wasn't like he really demanded much from you, and you should be more grateful to him; he provided so much for you.
But then again, shouldn't you be free to make your own decisions? Why should you bend to his will like a reed on the bank of a surging river, unwilling to stand up for yourself and tell him that you have your own rights? You pondered this as you shuffled your feet, stuffed into matte black snow boots, in the untouched snow. No one else was out at this hour, and that was probably why he asked you to meet him this late. So he could end it with no one else around.
Against your will, tears started gathering in your eyes as you thought about him. You loved him, you really did. You would have done anything to make him stay, even if it was confining, suffocating even.
"(Y/N)? Is that you?" You almost fell to your knees as the familiar voice rang through your ears. Scratch that. You would have done almost anything to make him stay.
You felt a warmth surround your shivering frame, and you looked up, silently wishing your tears away. Jay stood there, thin lips pushed into a pout as he adjusted his long tan jacket on your shoulders. His tight black turtleneck clung to his muscles as he stepped back and gave you a worried smile. "What are you doing out here so late?" he asked, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his slim-legged gray pants. As he leaned back against a lone streetlight, the yellow glow giving him an almost angelic look, you felt hot tears beginning to stream down your cheeks. You clutched his jacket around yourself tightly as you felt your chest beginning to heave, sobs threatening to escape your swollen throat, and your face crumpled as you looked away from your best friend. "Hey, what's going on?" he asked, panicked, and you felt his warm hands grasping yours. He knelt down in front of you, his thin frame entering your line of vision once again, and squeezed your cold hands in his. Snow wet the knee of his pants as his warm legs melted the surrounding white substance, and you suddenly felt more sorry than ever, for taking his coat, for ruining his expensive pants, for putting him through this.
"You can't be here right now," you said, shaking your head. You shrugged off his coat and handed it back to him, making him stand up again to avoid the bottom of the coat dragging in the snow. You kept your gaze downward, staring at his pointy black shoes and nothing else.
"Why not?" he asked, and you could tell he was getting mad. "Why can't I be here?"
You just shook your head again, licking your cold, dry lips.
"It's because of him, isn't it?" he asked, voice rising. "Your shitty boyfriend."
"Watch your mouth," a second voice snapped, and you held your breath, immediately freezing up as you felt an arm slide around your shoulders.
"You're destroying them, Jungwon," Jay said, gripping his coat in one hand so tightly his knuckles turned white, "look at them. They're a shell of the person they used to be."
Jungwon scoffed, gripping your shoulder with his large hand, pulling you in even closer. "They like being with me. If they've changed, it's for the better. But I think you're making stuff up, Jay."
"Come on, (Y/N)," Jay said, his voice lowered once again, breaking at the end of your name, "this isn't you. The (Y/N) I know would never take this kind of shit, from anyone. Let alone your own boyfriend."
"They like it with me—"
"They can speak for themselves, Jungwon!" Jay snapped, cutting off your boyfriend. You could tell it made him mad, from the way he cleared his throat and tightened his grip on you even more. You were worried that you would be bruised when he let you go.
"Fine," Jungwon said in a slippery voice, "then, pick between me and him, (Y/N)."
You swallowed hard, teeth chattering from the cold and the fear as Jungwon let go of your shoulder and stepped forward, standing beside Jay. You finally looked up, crying again, and looked at Jay first. His brows were slanted, lips spread into a thin line as he put his coat back on, not taking his eyes off of you. Then you looked at Jungwon, the love of your life, with a subtle, calm smile on his face, cat-like eyes heavily lidded as he anticipated your decision, already knowing what you would say. With an unsure tone, you finally spoke up. "I choose Jungwon," you said, in almost a whisper.
You wished you had looked away, as the way Jay's face fell when you said Jungwon's name instead made your heart shatter into pieces. He was just trying to save you, and you pushed away his help.
"That's right, my love," Jungwon said, taking you roughly by the hand. "Let's go."
You looked back at Jay only once more as you were being led away, and he just shook his head at you, and you swore you could hear him scoffing in disbelief as he retreated away from the glow of the streetlight. Snow began to fall again, dark clouds blocking out the light of the moon and the stars, and you knew that you'd made the wrong decision. But what else could you do? You were trapped. This was all you knew. And no one could save you, not even Jay.
