THE SCINTILLATING CHANDELIERS of the resteraunt hung above Aiden and me as we sat in an intimate private dining room—just the two of us. Mere hours had passed since the meeting, and before retreating to the estate, Aiden had casually suggested we grab a bite to eat.

This place was certainly fancier than The Bonfire, and the private dining was certainly a first time experience for me.

The music in the restaurant granted me a wave of nostalgia as we sat across from eachother exchanging looks. His dark brown eyes trailed the contours of my face, dipping down to my neck, and remaining there like he was committing every inch of me to memory.

"I love this song," I said suddenly lowering my gaze to my fingers that tapped nervously against the table. "I used to make my Lola play this every car ride to school on the radio as a kid."

Aiden grinned. "So you were always annoying?"

I playfully gasped at his teasing insult, my breath hitching before I could stop it. He studied my reaction before a flicker of contemplating reached his eyes.

I stiffened slightly feeling a rise of self-consciousness creeping in, settling heavy in my chest.

"What?" I asked.

He raised his brows lazily. "I wanna ask the questions this time...it's only fair since last time you put me in the hot seat."

I let out a sheepish huff. "What do you wanna know cause unlike you I don't have a criminal history the size of Texas. I'm an open book."

Aiden leaned back in his chair, studying me like I was a puzzle he was piecing together. "Tell me something, Sophie—when was the exact moment you stopped being the person everyone expected you to be?"

The question hit deeper than I wanted to admit. My fingers tightened around my fork as I let out a breathy laugh, shaking my head. "You mean my fall from grace?"

"Exactly that," his low voice responded. "And I can't figure it out. How can someone manage to be both predictable and chaotic, both innocent and tainted? You're a mind fuck."

I scoffed, more to fill the silence than anything. "I'm not sure what you're asking."

His gaze didn't waver. "I want an explanation," he said simply. "Why does Sophie the sweetheart willingly walk through my world?"

"Willingly?" I huffed. "I don't have a choice with you."

"Really?" He drawled. "Then who told you to wear my ring to the club last night?
