Chapter Seven - Alone (Harvey)

The girl wakes up feeling something off. She gets up, turns off her alarm, and gets dressed in a regular red T-shirt and long shorts. The girl spots a note on the door and hears a loud boom! outside. She runs to the door, grabs the note, and hides in the corner to read it. She has to focus to read it since it's in cursive.

Harvey—
Everyone is battling by the time you wake up. Breakfast and lunch are by Medic's assigned bedroom door. Do not go downstairs. We will be done by 7 and I will come check on you with Demoman. I recommend keeping your door locked until you need to leave. I left some lessons for you to keep busy until we get back. If you hear any loud noises, do not panic; I am sure Scout has left a pair of headphones and a few mixtapes alongside mine if you want to listen to music. Those are by your breakfast bag. We will see you soon.
—Spy

Harvey pokes her head out of the crack of her door and steps out. She immediately sees two brown bags by the door with Medic's symbol on it. By one, there are two small stacks of mixtapes and a pair of headphones. She picks up the mixtapes and the headphones first. She hangs the headphones from her neck and picks up the breakfast bag. She manages to get back into her room and puts down the bag on her desk. She places all of the tapes on her bed and puts the headphones down beside them. She opens the bag and eats the toast in it. It's pretty dry, but she eats it anyway. She finds an orange in the bag as well and peels it. How long has it been since she even tasted on of these?

She throws the bag away and eats the orange as she looks through the mixtapes. Scout's music is made up of primarily Tom Jones and The Beatles. She's never really heard of either of them. Spy's mixtapes are all beginner's French lessons, starting from the one labelled "Beginner French 1". They look like they were stolen. They all have a label from a library Harvey has never heard of.

The girl looks at the headphones. She figures out how to play the tapes and starts with the first French mixtape. She puts the rest of the tapes piled up neatly on her desk so she can get the next one if she wants to.

The first lesson is all about the extremely basic stuff. It's all about "hello", "bye", and a few other one-word responses. The biggest one she has to recite is "how are you?". She does replay the tape a few times; she's not super good with learning through listening, she guesses. She reassures herself with how she pronounces it and moves on. She's a bit mad with herself about not getting it really well or really fast—she expects a lot from herself, and others are probably expecting the same—but she continues on with the tape. She hears two people talking to each other with all of the words and phrases she has learned. They talk pretty fast, but she manages to repeat and translate what they say. It goes on to colors and "I like...", which Harvey has a bit more fun with. She gets through the rest of the tape a lot less agitated. She finishes it, rewinds it for whoever might listen to it next, and disconnects the tape from the headphones. She decides to look at the tapes Scout left.

There are five tapes, and they are all either Scout's favorite albums or the hit songs from his favorite artists. Tom Jones sounds a lot more familiar than The Beatles to Harvey now that she's thinking about it. Maybe her dad listened to one of his songs before? She puts the album in, and the first song starts. It doesn't really sound appropriate, but Harvey doesn't know that. Another explosion echoes into her room from much, much closer this time. She doesn't pay a lot of attention to it; she finds her key and locks the door. She's more in her own world, smiling at some memories with her dad.

Harvey doesn't know her dad super well. Not like knowing his every thought familiar, but she knows he loved her. He wasn't always there because of work until last year. She actually got to spend her sixth birthday with him. Obviously, Tom Jones wasn't his favorite singer, but Jones's songs have been there sometimes with him in her memories. She fondly remembers going on a small trip to New Orleans with him and Harlow. They were all freaked out by the river going through New Orleans, but it was fun. Then he said something about divorcing her mom. And he did. She still doesn't know how to feel about it. Where is he now?
