Ekansh gazed out of the car window as it carried him toward the destination his brother Abhimanyu had assigned. The cityscape blurred by, and with each passing mile, anticipation grew. He was headed toward a place that promised to irrevocably change the course of his life to a different way.
As the morning sun began to rise, Roohi Oberoi stepped out of her home with a bright smile. Full of youthful energy and a touch of innocence, she started her day with a spring in her step.
She cheerfully swept the floor, her movements light and lively, while the sounds of the village waking up filled the air. Roohi’s smile never faded as she moved from task to task, whether scrubbing pots or tending to her small garden.
After finishing her chores, she took a moment to sit quietly in the courtyard. Her eyes sparkled with joy, and her gentle laughter added to the peaceful atmosphere. Roohi's lively spirit and kind heart made her a warm presence in the village.
Roohi looked at her aunt Meera, who was inspecting the bruises on her hand. Meera’s face filled with concern as she turned her gaze toward Roohi with a look of pity.
"Beta, what is this?" Meera asked, her voice thick with worry.
"Chachi, please don’t worry," Roohi replied with a smile, trying to ease her aunt’s concern. But Meera’s expression shifted to one of mild anger.
"Roohi, tell me, what are these bruises?" Meera insisted, her eyes focused on Roohi's hand. Roohi sighed softly.
"Badi Chachi used to beat me if I made any mistakes while working," Roohi admitted, looking down at the floor, and Meera’s eyes welled up with tears.
"How could she do this? Doesn’t she have any mercy?" Meera asked, her voice trembling as she stared at the bruises. Roohi made a pained expression, trying to suppress her emotions.
"I thought they would take care of you, but look at how they're treating my child," Meera said, her voice breaking. "I’ve told them I would look after you, but they refused to let you stay with us. They don’t even let you stay long when we ask for you to stay here, only sending you for a few days at a time."
Roohi’s situation was heartbreaking. She had another uncle and aunt who were older than Meera and Harish. It was with this elder uncle, Harsh, and his wife, Maya, that Roohi lived. There, she was treated more like a maid, and any mistakes she made were met with harsh punishment. The bruises on her hand were the result of these beatings.
Meera and her husband Harish had no children of their own and had always wanted to take care of Roohi as their daughter. But Harish’s elder brother, Harsh, and his wife, Maya, wouldn’t allow it. When Roohi’s parents-Harish’s other elder brother and his wife-passed away, Harsh and Maya had taken Roohi into their care, insisting they would look after her. Whenever Meera and Harish wanted to see Roohi, they had to request her visit, and even then, Roohi was only allowed to stay for a few days. During those brief visits, Roohi was showered with love and care, finding her happiest moments with Harish and Meera, who cherished her as if she were their own daughter.
Harish returned home with a warm smile and called out as he entered, "Roohi beti, Meera!" Roohi immediately ran towards him, her face lighting up with a smile. Harish sighed in contentment, feeling his day was complete just by seeing his daughter’s smile. He gently caressed her head, cherishing the moment.
"You two, father and daughter, finished with your talk? Come, let’s have breakfast," Meera said, joining them with a soft smile. Harish and Roohi exchanged a glance and smiled, then made their way to the breakfast table.
"Chachi, can I go out with Chachu today?" Roohi asked eagerly, her eyes shining with excitement. Meera looked at her fondly and returned the smile.
"You are not, beta Chachu has to go somewhere else first. But once he’s back, and after he visits the farm, then you can go with him," Meera explained gently. Roohi nodded, understanding.
"Roohi beta, I’m heading out now," Harish said as he approached her, his hand lovingly caressing her head. Roohi looked up at him and smiled. Harish returned the smile before stepping out of the house.
Ekansh stared out the window and sighed, exhausted from hours of travel. The destination was still a few hours away, and the journey was wearing him down. He despised coming to this remote place; the distance and endless traveling left him drained. All he wanted was to finish the work quickly so he could return to the city. With another sigh, he leaned back in his seat, unaware of how his life was about to take a drastic turn-one that would leave him feeling even more desperate.
