10 years later...
luna, nica, rigel - 17 years old

i sat on my bed at grave, soaking in my last moments here. nica and adeline my two best friends in this place sat beside me. "i can't believe you girls are leaving today" adeline said.

"i don't wanna go addy" i said, "i don't wanna leave you" i said. "hey. you shouldn't be here. you deserve to have a family" she smiled. "you both do."

"we'll come visit you" nica smiled, "you better not" she chuckled.

"come on, it's time" adeline said. nica and i grabbed our bags and met with the couple that would be fostering us and of course miss. margaret was standing there with her cane.

"remember girls, this is only a trial period. if you act up, luna. you will be sent back to us" she said. "i'm sure everything will go well!" the lady said.

"i'm anna, this is my husband norman" she smiled, "nice to meet you. i'm luna" i smiled, "i'm nica."

"do you girls need help with your bags?" norman asked, "oh no that's okay" i smiled softly.

as we were headed out, we heard someone play the piano from the auditorium. norman and anna shared a look and we found ourselves standing there watching rigel play.

"who is that?" anna asked, "that is rigel" nica and i both replied.

"rigel's record is not good, i feel that we are better to equip him" margret explained. "we got this. like you said it's just a trail period, right?" anna asked. "right" miss. margret said.

there the three of us were heading to our new home. rigel sat by the window seat, i was in the middle, and nica was on my left side.

the drive to the milligans house was not far, about 20 minutes. "here we are" norman said parking the car.

i grabbed my bag and looked at the house. "come on!" anna said. rigel and i shared a glance, "are you excited?" nica smiled linking her arm with mine.

i wasn't excited at all. i only went with nica because i promised adeline i would keep her safe.

"i am!" i said. "come on, girls i'll show you your rooms. norman can you take rigel to his?" anna asked. "yes, of course" he replied.

"i hope you like it, nica" anna smiled, the walls had butterfly wallpaper and the bed had a white duvet. "this is perfect. i haven't had my own room in a long time" nica smiled widely.

"come on, luna. i'll show you to your room" she smiled.  "my same friend who helped me with nica's room, helped with yours" anna smiled.

she opened the door, the walls were black and painted on the ceiling was a moon and there was glow in the dark stars around it. it was like spaced themed.

"this is beautiful" i smiled setting my bags down, "i'm happy you like it" she said. "i'll let you settle down. dinner will be ready soon" she said.

i didn't want to unpack my things, unpacking meant that this would be permanent. i didn't want to stay here. i couldn't stay.

i grabbed some clothes and decided to go take a shower. the hot water hit my skin, but it felt refreshing to me. 

i got out and dried myself off. i looked down at my wrists and thighs, seeing the scars that margret and myself have given me.

why was i so unworthy of being loved? what have i done to deserve this?

i finished getting dressed and hung the towel behind the door. "jesus christ!" i said putting a hand over my heart, seeing rigel standing right in front of the doorframe.

"what the fuck are you doing?" i asked, "i have to use the bathroom" he said. "so you just there peeping?" i scoffed. "peeping?" he chuckled, i rolled my eyes and moved out of the way.

rigel's eyes looked me up and down, "nice pajamas" he smirked. "shut up!" i said playfully shoving him back. i walked over to my bedroom and grabbed my slippers and hoodie.

"kids! dinner is ready!" anna called out, i sighed softly and walked downstairs. anna and norman sat on one side of the table. nica was on the right side of rigel, he was in the middle, and i was on the left side of him.

"this is really good, thank you anna" nica smiled cutting her steak. anna looked over at me, i wasn't in the mood to eat. i never was.

"honey, are you okay?" anna asked, "yes, thank you" i said forcing myself to eat the food. it was good, but i felt sick to my stomach.

"so, you guys have been at the orphanage a long time?" anna asked, "luna and i, got there around the same time. i was a month before her" nica shared.

"so, you must be close? the three of you?" anna asked. "yes, anna. nica and i are very close" rigel said squeezing her upper thigh.

i think i nearly threw up my food. "may i be excused?" i asked, "oh uh of course, honey" anna said. "thank you" i muttered and ran up to my room.

there was a knock on my door, "what" i said opening to see rigel. "why'd you run off like that? our future parents were very concerned" he said.

"do you think everything's a game? nica wants a family. don't ruin that for her" i scoffed. "i dont know what you're talking about" he said.

"oh you don't?" i laughed, "feeling her up under the dinner table doesn't ring a bell?" i asked. "you sound jealous" he smiled. "well, i'm not" i said.

"sure, about that?" he asked with a small smirk, "i'm positive. i don't like you, rigel. just stay away from nica" i said. "whatever you say" he said backing away from the door.

god he can be so infuriating sometimes.

i crawled under the covers, not prepared to go to school. i could feel the nervousness already kick in and i didn't like it.
