Rex stares down at the water, then quietly says, "I was stressed. But not about any search party."
You look quizzically at Rex. "What?"
Rex kneads his hands together in his lap. "I mean, I feel more relaxed now, but I don't really know how to talk to you." You see a flush creep up Rex's neck. He was nervous to talk to you?
Trying to lighten the mood, you reply, "You're talking to me now. It's not so hard."
Rex shrugs, still staring at the water. He then looks over at you, eyes glimmering in the dull light. "Want to swim?"
Before you can reply, Rex slides down the rock and into the water. It must be pretty deep because Rex's head slips under the water and then back up. He turns around to face you while wiping a hand over his wet eyes. "It's not even that cold."
You stare at Rex, still not answering him. You glance down his toned shoulders and end up unintentionally staring at his chest. "You didn't answer my question." Rex wipes his eyes again.
Everything in your being is screaming at you to get in the water, but you can't move.
Rex swims up to you and grabs onto the rock besides your leg. "Are- are you afraid of the water?"
Oh no. You hadn't answered in time. Well, now you could pretend to not know how to swim. You'd look like an idiot in his arms, but who cares? No one was there.
But no, your responsible self just had to blurt out, "I can swim." You slip into the water, your head also going under for a split second. It really was deep. You resurface and feel a hand under your elbow holding you up. Wiping your eyes, you looked down to see Rex holding you with one hand, while still gripping the wall. "Not that cold, right?"
"I mean, it is a tropical planet."
Rex smiles and lets go of you and the wall. "One second." He reaches under the water and slips the top of his blacks over his head, dipping down under the water as he does so. He resurfaces and flings the wet blacks up onto the rock. You can't help but stare at his shoulder as he moves his arm back into the water. You force yourself to look him in the eyes, immediately regretting it. He has smug grin on his face.
You dip your head under the water and swim a ways away from Rex, desperate to hide your flushing face. You resurface and glance back at Rex, who is swimming towards you leisurely on his back. You try to look away... unsuccessfully.
Rex catches up to you and faces you, the waterline reaching just under his shoulders. He seems to be searching your face. Or maybe he just didn't know what to say. "It really isn't too cold, right?"
"No. It's not too warm either." You wish you hadn't said that.
Rex smirks and bobs up and down in the water. "Definitely not too warm." He stares at you with a look you've never seen on his face before. You have a feeling he isn't talking about the water temperature anymore.
You can feel your face turning a slight shade of pink as Rex continues to stare. All you can hear is the occasional drip of water in the cave.
"Do you want to swim to the outside of the cave?" Rex asks.
"Sure." You immediately dive underwater and begin swimming towards the mouth of the cave, not looking back. Anything to take your mind off of Rex.
You reach the area just before mouth of the cave. Waves thunder by your head as they hit the rocky wall, echoing all around you. Rex resurfaces next to you. He shouts, "That's really loud!"
"Wow, I hadn't noticed!" You shout back. Rex laughs. You wish you could hear his laugh better over the roar of the waves.
Rex moves to start swimming towards the waves, but you place a hand on his shoulder. "That's dangerous. You could get stuck."
Rex looks over his shoulder at you. Then after a few seconds of debating, turns around to face you. "Are you sure?"
"I grew up by the beach. Those waves aren't safe, Rex."
Rex's face drops for a split second before he lights up again. "Race you back." Rex darts underwater, and you scramble after him.
Rex reaches the rock wall where you were sitting earlier first. You follow a close second behind. "Well, I won on the way to the waves, so it's fine."
Rex beams, "I wasn't going to let you win again."
You smile smugly, an idea coming to you. "Rex, I'm kind of tired. Want to get out now?"
Rex's smile fades slightly, "Okay." You watch Rex put his arms up on the rock and heave himself out of the water. The water cascades from his back like a mini waterfall. Erm, your plan involves something a little sillier, but you were getting to it.
Trying to keep your voice even and natural, you ask, "Can you help me out?" Rex bends down on his knees and lowers a hand to you. You grab onto his hand and pull down into the water with all you can muster.
Rex falls in with wide eyes, covering you in a wave of water. He resurfaces, spitting and shaking his head, spraying water everywhere. "What was that for!" Rex stares at you, amused.
You laugh, throwing your head back. You stop laughing when you feel his arms wrap around the bottom of your legs and pull you under.
Under the water, you open your eyes and look down. Rex is still holding on tight. You squirm and kick, not wanting to hurt him, but you only have so much oxygen left.
Rex quickly lets go and swims up to be eye level with you under the water. He puts his hands on your shoulders and stares at you. You blink away some of the water. It only slightly hurts.
You stare at Rex as he stares at you. What was this? A breathing contest? Rex pushes off from your shoulders and resurfaces above the water. He gasps for air and then goes back under. You decide to copy him, meeting him back under the water at his eye level.
That's when you feel his hand graze your side. You let out a puff of air, bubbles escaping to the surface. Rex slides the same hand around to your back and pushes you closer to himself. You brace for contact, trying your best to hold in the little air that was left in your mouth as your chests touch. With Rex's face inches from yours, you close your eyes. You smile when you feel his soft lips brush up against yours. You part your lips slightly as Rex presses against your lips. His grip tightens on your waist and you soon feel the cold rush of the cave air against your face.
Rex separates for moment to take a breath before crashing back into your lips. You put a hand on his cheek and place the other on his chest. Rex hums in contentment and accidentally pushes you up against the rock wall, the air temporarily leaving your lungs. Rex breaks away and begins profusely apologizing, "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to do that."
You stare into space, waiting for the air to return to your lungs. In the meantime you pat Rex on the chest, understanding his sentiment.
Rex wraps his arms around you and swims away from the rock wall. He smiles and leans his forehead against yours. "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, Rex." You close your eyes, enjoying the feeling of being so closely held by him.
Rex chuckles, his breath dancing across your face. "Kix is gonna kill me when he finds out about this."
You break away from his forehead. "You're not going to tell him, right?"
"I mean about us."
You smile and lean your forehead back against Rex's, closing your eyes. "He'll kill me first."
Once you were rescued, Kix was in fact very overprotective of his medical assistant seeing his Captain, but he wasn't against it.
