Year 2022
Charlotte stood in the far corner, her nerves and emotions all over the place. Her hands felt clammy at her sides, and she couldn't stop fiddling with her trousers.
She was nervous as heck.
As the Grad Ball unfolded before her eyes, she kept her gaze fixed on the only person who mattered most to her at that moment--Engfa Waraha.
Engfa Waraha, her best friend, for whom she had harbored secret romantic feelings ever since they were partnered on that chemistry project in their freshman year.
Engfa Waraha, who was chatting with everyone around her, her dimpled smile on display and her eyes full of life.
Charlotte planned to confess her feelings tonight, as there was no certainty about what would happen after they graduated from college. She would be continuing her studies to earn her Juris Doctor degree, leaving Phuket for the city.
Before she left, she hoped to rely on her lucky stars and confess her feelings, in hopes that Engfa felt the same way.
Swallowing her cowardice, she made her way toward the woman she loved, her shoulders heavy with emotion and determination.
"P'Fa," she called out as she stopped right behind Engfa.
Engfa, who was talking to a friend, turned around and smiled automatically upon seeing Charlotte.
Engfa would not deny it: she found Charlotte Austin attractive. From the very first time she saw Charlotte as a freshman, she developed a crush on the younger woman.
She watched as Charlotte transformed from a timid, silent girl into the beautiful and confident woman she was now. Engfa felt a surge of pride when Charlotte announced she would pursue law school--imagine, the once-shy Charlotte carving her path through the complexities of law and jurisprudence?
Engfa was in awe.
"Char, what's the matter?" Engfa asked, noticing the hint of unease in Charlotte's eyes.
"Can I talk to you?" Charlotte replied, her tone serious. "Alone." She glanced at the person behind Engfa, who was still waiting to continue their conversation.
"Oh, right now?" Engfa asked. Charlotte nodded. "Okay, let me just..." she gestured to her friend behind her.
Charlotte nodded and took a step back.
Engfa turned to her friend, excusing herself before following Charlotte across the room to the door leading to the veranda.
Once outside, the cool night air brushed against their faces. Charlotte propped her elbows on the metal railings, and Engfa did the same. For a moment, silence enveloped them, and they savored the tranquility of the night.
The music from inside was a distant murmur, yet it provided a comforting backdrop to Charlotte's nervously beating heart.
"P'Fa," Charlotte began, "what are you going to do after college?"
Engfa glanced at Charlotte, who was staring straight ahead.
"Just like I planned, my uncle will hire me in the family business. That’s why I took up entrepreneurship," Engfa shrugged.
"I'm going to Bangkok," Charlotte said, still not looking at Engfa. "I'll be pursuing law school."
"I know. Good luck with that, Char." Engfa smiled, though Charlotte still wouldn't meet her gaze. "You won’t forget about me, will you?" she joked.
