"The trial of a squire is not to be taken lightly, Luke. It requires time, dedication, and constant vigilance," said Mika.
Luke nodded, acknowledging that this was the one weakness of his system. While the power he had gained granted him near-limitless abilities and potential, experience was a strength he had to earn on his own.
He began daily studies under Mika, who taught him several new skills, such as how to use sword magic and how to identify which forest vegetation was safe to eat and which was poisonous. He also learned some of her secret sword and fist-fighting techniques. To her surprise, Mika discovered that Luke had managed to evolve into a martial sage in such a short time. It wasn't rare for someone to change their class based on training, but it was uncommon, especially for an eight-year-old boy.
Despite his young age, Luke trained hard every day. Mika had him fight against hobgoblins and king slimes. She even allowed him to assist her in battling a raptor, a second-tier monster. Much to her astonishment, Luke defeated it with a single powerful strike using the newly gifted mythril sword that the Gold Paladins had given him as a present.
Although Luke preferred wearing his adventurer's garb, he donned some armor on his arms, legs, and torso—though he opted against full armor. After defeating the raptor, he was able to keep its scales, using his blacksmithing skills to craft himself some stylish new arm guards and greaves.
As he began to learn sword magic, he found it quite exciting. He excelled in light sword magic, which was rare; typically, only the sword saint and her followers were proficient in it.
"Okay, Luke, try this sword spell," said Mika.
"I call upon the sword that is the blade of destiny: Wheel of Fate!" She swung her sword in an arc, sending a wheel of light magic toward the target, a large magic pillar enchanted to never break.
"Okay, I call upon the sword that is the blade of destiny: Wheel of Fate!" I shouted, swinging my sword and sending a blade of light energy into the target. The wheel hit the pillar and exploded.
"Good job, young Luke!" Mika praised.
"Thank you, Lady Mika," I replied.
"Now then, do 300 push-ups, 300 squats, 300 sit-ups, 300 lateral jumps, and 500 laps around the entire Knights' barracks," Mika commanded.
"Yes, ma'am," I responded. Thankfully, my stamina stats were already at the mid-tier adventurer level, so this was pretty much child's play for me. Yes, this was normal for a squire's internship.
"Now hit this ironwood tree as hard as you can a thousand times!" she instructed.
"Yes, ma'am," I said, beginning to hammer the tree with my thrusts.
After completing this, it was time for sword practice.
"I want to see you sweat; give me five thousand of every sword strike you've got, on the double!" Mika ordered.
"I am the sword that smites evil!" I proclaimed, quoting the mantra of a legendary hero from the stories I had read as I swung my sword for the 4,998th time. Finally, after two more strikes, I finished the morning workout, and it was only 8:00 AM.
Afterward, we had a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, pork belly, and bangers and mash—a dish consisting of sausage and mashed potatoes with gravy, aptly named for the explosive pops the sausage makes and the hand-mashed potatoes.
The food was great, but it was now time for morning studies.
After several hours of studying, it was time for adventure course training, also known as monster battling.
