ONE DAY BEFORE
Jungkook stood in front of the full-length mirror, fastening the leather straps of his midnight black armor. The smooth scales that lined the coat shimmered faintly under the dim lighting, absorbing rather than reflecting the morning sun that streamed through the arched windows. The heavy fur cloak draped over his shoulders added to the weight of the day, both literal and metaphorical, but Jungkook wore it with ease.
His hands moved methodically—buckle, fasten, pull—yet his mind was elsewhere, tethered to the forest and the unknown waiting beyond the portal tonight. His wolf prowled within him, pacing with restless anticipation. The Moon Goddess's pull was stronger than ever, thrumming in his veins like a pulse that refused to quiet.
Outside the windows, the skies were painted a dull grey, clouds swirling ominously over the forest as if the heavens themselves were unsettled by what was to come. Below, the ancient oak trees swayed restlessly, their canopies whispering secrets Jungkook couldn’t yet hear.
The door to his chamber flew open with a loud bang, nearly shaking the hinges. Jin stormed inside, trailing silken layers of his lilac robes, each embroidered with intricate silver patterns that glinted whenever the fabric swirled. His omega scent—soft, sweet like lavender and fresh linen—filled the room instantly, thick with distress.
“This is absurd!” Jin declared dramatically, arms flailing as he stormed toward Jungkook. “You are NOT going through that cursed portal!”
Jungkook didn’t bother turning. He kept his attention on his reflection, adjusting the sword holster across his chest. “You’re being ridiculous, Jin hyung.”
Jin gasped, clutching a hand to his chest as though Jungkook had just announced his intent to leap off a cliff. “Ridiculous? You’re talking about traveling to another dimension to meet a mate who may not even exist, and you think I’m the ridiculous one?”
Namjoon stepped into the room behind Jin, looking as if he had just emerged from a battle he hadn’t volunteered for. His coat hung loose over his shoulders, and the edges of his sleeves were rumpled, clear signs of Jin’s earlier tugging. The Alpha’s exasperation radiated off him in waves as he gave Jungkook a silent look that screamed, Help me.
“I told you to lock him in his room,” Jungkook muttered, more to himself than anyone else.
“I tried,” Namjoon grumbled, dragging a hand down his face. “He bit me.”
“I nibbled,” Jin shot back, glaring daggers at Namjoon before turning his attention back to Jungkook. “And don’t think for a second that you can ignore me, baby brother. This plan is reckless, dangerous—”
“—Necessary,” Jungkook interrupted, his tone flat as he finally turned to face him. “You know what’s at stake, hyung.”
Jin’s lips pressed into a pout, the familiar drama in his expression giving way to genuine worry. His hands were trembling slightly as he raised it, and his fist squeezed Jungkook's forearm tightly. "What if you don't return? " His voice softened and barely above a whisper.
Jungkook’s wolf stirred beneath his skin, momentarily soothed by the affection in Jin’s touch, but it didn’t change his resolve. “I will.”
Namjoon shifted awkwardly by the door, clearly trying to distance himself from the emotional chaos of an upset omega. “He’s not going alone, Jin. Yoongi and I will be there to keep him out of trouble.”
